Oh my goodness! That piece is being auctioned as "authentic." Some unsuspecting buyer is going to get royally stung.
It's a shame it's not authentic because it's a great portrait of Gable.
The handwriting in the dedication looks like his, imo. The sig itself fits, too, in my opinion, but looks very carefully and quite slowly written. Doesn't have to be a sign of fake, because Gable certainly would have given some care and attention on signing such a beautiful item. At the time of that movie he was relatively young, so that might be okay for an early sig. The ink is definetly very vintage.
You make some valid points. If authentic, that signed Gable portrait would be definitely be a crown jewel in any collection.
