On December 2, Julien's Auctions is selling The Collection of Tompkins and Bush. The collection contains 465 lots of Michael Jackson memorabilia, 287 of them autographed.

Michael Bush and the late Dennis Tompkins were Michael Jackson's costume designers for 25 years, during Jackson's most successful period. They were the consignors of the signed Thriller jacket that Julien's sold for $1,800,000 in June 2011.

Almost all of the autographs in the Tompkins and Bush sale are a variation I'm not familiar with. I've only been looking at Jackson's autograph for a few years, though, and we have members here who have collected him for decades, so I'd appreciate your input and exemplars.

If you know Michael Jackson's autograph well, please look at a few images below from the auction and let me know what you think. Even better, browse the auction and upload any similar examples you have: http://www.julienslive.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/77/

Julien's is the world's premier auction house for Michael Jackson memorabilia, so they would know his autograph better than most of us. I'm just surprised I haven't seen this style before.

Thanks for your help.

Well, surely Bush would be able to show the unsigned shirt if there were doubles. Right...?

This could well be another smoking gun, right there. Amazing work, girls!!!

That display was loaned for D23 by Lucasfilms as far as I know. If that's the case it's probably a different shirt.

Thank you Steve.  I would still like to see the Lucasfilms shirt (unsigned).

And I would like to know the background information, if any, other than bush's comment on his FB page: "remember this like it was yesterday" when he uploaded this image in 2009.  Anyone know if he gave any additional info on the EO costume shown in the photo?

I did more digging, and found pictures from D23 (which was on display in Sept of 2009) and it does look to be a different shirt that he has.  His does not have a wide enough, deep colored enough purple/blue top stripe  (not going to upload these they would lose the detail, you'll need to click the links... beautiful display and you can see how the leather has become brittle with age.  http://www.endorexpress.net/wp-content/uploads/captaineolarge/

This one is of the top area of the shirt you may need to click it twice (once to open and once to enlarge) http://www.endorexpress.net/wp-content/uploads/captaineolarge/IMG_4...

Could he NOT leave one single piece of iconic MJ untouched by his foul hand?! He just desecrated it all.

Every symbol of the joy and essence of Michael Jackson which MJ worked so hard to create and generate into our society - greedy predators have (and continue) to destroy. Seeing all of this "new" disrespect is making me SO ANGRY again!

"Jackson wore this shirt as he portrayed Captain EO in the 3-D film of the same name"... THIS SHIRT.

So what's the story gonna be now? There's such and such amount of these that were made for the film shoot. Okay. Where are they? Show us the UNsigned one from your FB page, Bush.

As Steve said to go ahead and upload the photos, here they are:

Gaaaah seeing the lot of them makes me so mad. And yes, it makes me mad at Julien for allowing these atrociously bad fakes. One can see them from a mile off, WHAT excuse could he possibly have?!?! He's handled enough real ones, I'm sure.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Helen.  I agree with you.  Darren certainly HAS handled enough real signatures to know the difference.  That is his profession to know, and to employ additional learned staff to know.

And I absolutely DO see genuine MJ signatures mixed in with the fakes in the 3-4 past Julien's auction catalogs I've been looking through so far.

The differences between the real and the fake are like night and day - even to the untrained eye.  So as you say, HOW could Darren not see them and call himself a professional???

Also in this auction -- Legends, October 8, 2010, he tagged a Destiny Tour photo.

Lot 321

Yuuuuup. *smh*

I found that MJ secretarial signatures have been sold as genuine MJ signatures in Julien's past auction sales... (surprise).

A classic MJ secretarial signature has the tell-tale loop after the J.  I learned to spot these from the excellent MJ article by Kimberly Cole in 2009 Autograph magazine.  Here's the relevant excerpt:

From the Juliens June 23, 2012 Sports Legends and Music Icons auction -

Lot 869  -  Sold for $576.

Julien's Description: "A Michael Jackson signed MJJ Productions promotional photograph housed in a silver tone frame. The photograph, which shows Jackson with a black panther, is inscribed "To Bob/ Love/ Michael Jackson" in black ink.  11 3/4 by 9 3/4 inches, framed"

From the Juliens June 24, 2010 Music and Icons auction -

Lot 445  -  Sold for $53,125.  What's scary is the purported "story" provenance on this.

Julien's Description:  A black felt fedora with black gross grain ribbon hat band. The interior hat band has "Michael Jackson" printed in gold and the underside of the brim is signed "Love Michael Jackson" in silver marker. This hat was gifted to President George H.W. Bush during Michael Jackson's visit to the White House on February 5, 1990. The hat is accompanied by two letters on White House engraved stationary from Larry Branscum of the National Security Council explaining that the President gave the hat to his assistant Patty Presock who gifted it to Branscum. Presock told Branscum that Jackson had handed the hat to the President saying, "here, Mr. President, perhaps one of your grandchildren might like to have this."

Lot 451  -  Sold for $1920.

Now we know that Michael befriended David Sonnet, the disabled boy in the video who had his Beat It jacket signed by MJ on a trip with Make A Wish Foundation to Neverland in 1992.  And we know the story that they kept in touch over the years, Michael sending signed photos, notes and fedoras.  My guess is that some were genuine MJ signed and some were secretarials.  Michael met and helped so many sick and disabled children that it would be a scheduling impossibility for him to personally sign EVERYTHING for all of them.  That's what secretaries are for :)

Julien's Description: "An Epic records black and white promotional photo for Jackson's album Bad, signed and inscribed in black marker, "To A very special boy David Sonnett all my love Michael Jackson. 8 1/2 by 11 inches"

http://www.julienslive.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/3/lot/451/

I'm unfortunately sure there are likely more secretarials that Juliens has sold, but those are the ones I've found so far..  I also have some more that I'm looking at (without the loop but I still believe are MJ secretarials).

P.S. - For those not familiar with this fact:  Darren Julien has made it a habit of holding Michael Jackson $$$ Sell Offs within a day or two, or even on the actual anniversary of Michael Jackson's death.  Exploitative.  Disrespectful.  Contemptuous.
