Bono w/ JSA basic cert on Ebay

So, if I'm following correctly, the JSA Basic Cert is basically the "we don't want to pay much attention to this but here's your sticker anyway" type of authentication. I stumbled upon this last night. It's a mess. It doesn't even really look rushed - just bad. I'm trying to see what JSA was looking at here that would prompt them to give this a pass. I'm not seeing it. Bono has given more than his share of ugly/bizarre autographs in the past, but if it doesn't clearly exhibit his standard signing traits, you're authenticating it based on what?

The Eastlink database is a great source for authentic U2 autographs. They are from fans (sometimes with accompanying photos of them with the band members). There is nothing for sale. It purely for informational purposes and a comparison of signatures from 1980 to present.

Eastlink's facebook page is equally excellent. Max and other members post new examples on a regular basis. Some are fan submitted. Some are from recent auctions after they have closed (usually only superior examples that are no doubt authentic).

Hello, Do you know who this is with the Bono autograph that you do not like i do and everything he gets in person with his kids and if anything Bono is sick of him. I would carry more weight in his than the other company with 8 or 9 on ebay.

Mark, please note that there was absolutely no mention at all in the Ebay auction about the item being obtained in person or any notation of the source at all. Rather, it was basically a synopsis about how it was certified by JSA and how awesome JSA is.

If you know the seller and think he's legit - great. I still don't think JSA should be certifying poor examples that look, at best, inconclusive. That's the issue here. I didn't think JSA could authenticate largely/solely on the basis of the source. Apparently, they do anyway.

I understand what you are saying Rich but he doesn't have to explain where or when, all the graphers know who he is and he lets the certs speak for them self i am pretty sure he and most of us can assume the items you guys go after have no certs or the ones with no names or phone numbers that you have no idea who you are even buying from. That being said you would be very suprised about who you are talking about he probably authenticated some of your stuff at jsa and a bunch of these other guys on this blog that do not show there names for whatever reason. I will always have guys backs in this hobby that are out all day and night chasing for hours on end just like we did the other day with B.B. King with all his racist bodyguards and hangeroners to get nothing signed but that is what we do, sometimes good sometimes not so good.You guys need to target the right people and not guys like this.Thanks Mark

This guy may be top knotch, but his certs really dont mean anything. Jsa, PSA, and every other big name authenticator gets questioned here regularly And forgers that use these high profile companies get called out and exposed regularly as well. In my experience it doesnt matter how big the company, how well known the individual, etc. Reputation and certs alone cant be enough to base an opinion on. And although typically the forgeries exposed arent equipped with JSA or PSA, it still happens. But this guys stuff may be 100 percent good. My point is that it doesnt matter if all his items are certed by JSA or Roger Epperson, if they are bad they are bad. The items have to speak for themselves, not certs or personal or public history.

I would have to disagree . When It comes to In person collectors , there are a few that are Iron Clad when they come from them . Such as Mike Wehrmann . There are alot of in person collectors I can say without a doubt there stuf is all legit . But proving it came from that person is tough as well .

The authenticator may be much more familiar with the autograph, giving him the confidence to call it genuine.

The friend in question worked for Spence doing hollywood autographs and modern baseball, football he did all the touring to shows he got sick of it more time away from his kids than when he was graphing so he quit and they will also tell you that. He still has input and is back at what he does best and spending quality time with his kids. I bought him out when he went to work for Spence a few years ago and nobody will say anything bad about him. I will also tell you he told me and i know for a fact that even items he got sometimes were signed so bad with these guys they just won't pass them even when they know they are real its just to much back lash from guys on here picking them apart and other places.
