PSA and JSA forgeries? Have you seen any you feel they possibly made a mistake on?

I'm not sure about you guys but I've seen a few in my years of searching ebay.  What about you?  Have you ever seen an autograph that was authenticated by a major authenticator ( EXCLUDING GAI ) that you thought was in fact a forgery?

If you have, please post scans if you have them available.  I know when it comes to authentication it is hard to beat JSA or PSA but I have read stories about some errors made by the companies.  The infamous Sal Bando incident is one that comes to mind http://rant.sportslizard.com/2007/12/01/jsa-authenticator-busted-on...

There are other examples very similar where JSA and PSA were at a show where an athlete was signing and someone swapped the real ball they had signed with a forgery they did before the show and the authenticator gave it the stamp of approval.   The Pete Rose incident is another example of where JSA assumed because Pete Rose was signing autographs at the show they were authenticating at, that every person who put a Pete Rose autograph in front of them must have the real thing.

Here is another link that shows where a forgery may have slipped through the cracks.  http://haulsofshame.com/blog/?p=10958

They ( PSA and JSA ) have authenticated printed signatures in books as authentic and have even authenticated a real signature of Kato Kaelin signature as being signed by Kate Hudson.

I am new here and certainly not here to cause a fuss, I am just curious as to what you guys think the % of fakes that do slip through the PSA or JSA cracks.  I think we can all be wise enough to admit that forgeries do get through.  There is no way they can be 100% all of the time.

I value their opinion but after looking at a Mantle that they authenticated ( It looks traced ) , I question just how good they truly are.  I had a Derrick Rose autograph that failed their authentication, but in fact...It was obtained in person BY ME at a Bulls vs Bobcats game.

I saw a youtube test video where a guy forged a Bob Feller autograph on camera and sent it in to PSA and it come back slabbed.  I just wonder if they are all they claim to be

I would buy that in a heartbeat, with our without the PSA Sticker. that is a very nice Mantle signature.

Charles,

It's important to be as sure as you can be you're right before you call something fake on this site, unless you qualify your opinion, for several reasons. You may wrongly harm the reputation of the authenticator or seller. You may unfairly make a genuine autograph hard or almost impossible to sell for market value. You may be confusing collectors and dealers by providing incorrect information to ones trying to learn how to authenticate or determine which sellers or authenticators are reputable. And whether they're true or not, they'll be picked up by sites run by members of the forgery industry.

Please keep that in mind before you post here. It's always OK to say you think something is good or bad if that's how you feel, but it's important to be fair.

More Garbage.......

Here is a PSA authenticated baseball signed by Al Pacino. PSA hacked off on this for one of their high volume dealers. No chance in hell does PSA authenticate this mess had I been the one who sent it in. This exactly why I believe they set the bar lower for their high volume submitters. Not saying this ball is a forgery. Knowing Pacino it may very well be legit. But I'd sure like to see the exemplars they have that it was compared to.

Mother of God that is the worst autograph I have EVER SEEN.  It literally made me LOL!!! =)  Thanks for sharing

PSA authenticated for a high volume EBAY seller.

Here is a celebrity example of a JSA hacking off on a bad signature. JSA has a habit of hacking off on these super neat Johansson sigs that lack the slant and have the squished S. I've seen 4 or 5 from them like exactly like this. First it is pulling teeth to get Johansson to sign. Then to get a super neat sig like this......5 times? Uh no chance. There are 45 of her sigs on EBAY with probably 25-30 authenticated by PSA, JSA and GA. I'd bet that you can count on 1 hand how many are authentic. I count maybe 8 and 5 of those 8 are not authenticated.. I saw a grip of her sigs when she signed overseas on her USO tour as well as the two times she was on Broadway. None ever came close to looking like this beauty.

That is clearly wrong for many more reasons than the neatness and lack of slant.

However, I would say that of the 5 PSA ones listed right now, all 5 are good. The strangest one is the silver 11x18 picture, but I happen to know that this one originally came from Autograph History, wo I trust. Another unusual one is the Avengers poster that supposedly came from an online contest, but I'd bet on it being real.

I didn't think all the PSA ones are good. My opinion comparing them to mine. Couple of them I did think were. The poster I think is good as well as the baseball.

Bunch of horrible sigs there for sure.

The PSA 8x10 in white by the pool is basically a textbook example of her signature. The 8x10 with Thora Birch is what her signature looked like at the start of her career. I explained where the unusual 11x18 in silver came from, and if you look at everything Will collected that day, you could see where it fits in at that time and place. Inked Autographs (the place with the poster) also has a 12x18 closeup shot of her face, that while it looks unusual, it does sort of match the 11x18 in silver. Full disclosure, I bought one from Inked recently that I'm 100% happy with.

I'm on a mobile device so I can't post the link, but the one I bought is item 190869948541

It has all the characteristics of her signatures on the official cds she signed for Newbury COmics, plus the special ipod that was auctioned on ebay in 2009 (the date INked has listed for the time of sighing.

Yes the PSA 8 x 10 is textbook. I think that is the nicest one of her on EBAY. I like the Inked Auto poster as well. Very nice. I took long look at their other photo as well. Was a tough one for me. I think probably good but dont like the signature. I dont think I have ever bought from them but have a grip of their autographs on my watch. Just haven't pulled the trigger on them yet.

Seems we sort of agree on which sigs look authentic. Curious to compare your opinion to mine on the massive amount of GA examples on EBAY.......

Did you get a chance to check out the one I just picked up? If you plug in the item number on ebay it should come up for you. I thought that was the nicest one Inked was offering and it has the greatest number of letters in it, so I'm happy.

I agree with you that the ball looks authentic. I think the fact that it's on a ball explains some of the little things that look slightly unusual, but overall it's a nice example.

The GA ones pretty much all look bad to me. Some have been able to get cose to the overall "feel" of her signature, but she's got a tough one to peg, especially when you get down to the ink thickness that seems to  e consistent when she signs. The matted one with the "old" signature may need to be looked at further because I haven't learned that style really, but I'd stay away from all of them.

This goes back to what we were saying before that PSA tends to get them right for celebrities more than JSA and the rest. I don't know how JSA passed that one, though. Even the GAI forgeries are better!

I just looked. I have seen that one. I had that on my watch list. Just wasn't sure what it would take to get it. I had that sig ranked up with the poolside pic as the best two.

Nice one.
