Many a times me and my compadres have been known to frequent hotels, restraunts, airports, etc. to obtain an autograph.  Personally, I don't really see a problem with it.  I just chalk it up to the price of fame.  However, I've heard many a people complain about graphers who graph hotels and airports.  I just wanted to get some insight from some people and see what you think; hotel/airport graphing- yea or nea?

for what its worth, I asked someone who knows Robert Plant personally, how he felt about autograph seekers:

"plant was so so. most of the people who asked for autographs were the ebay hounds. he avoided them and did his best to scare them off."

I would much rather pay $30-$75 to get someone's autograph at a show as opposed to being a GOOBER stalking them...

Im sorry I ever gave a reply to this person to begin with once I saw his attitude and language in his posts and profile. This guy is the poster boy for what is wrong with "street graphing". One of the reasons I gave up about fifteen years ago. The rude, the pushy just out to make a buck and ruin it for real fans and collectors. Most of the older "pros" at least had some tact and decency. Unfortunately most non sports type stars just don't do sit down shows and you need to pay a "mercenary" if you want Clint Eastwood in your collection.

Yup, fat old men with binders shoving kids out of the way and even when they get their item signed they don't get out of the way they keep pulling more stuff out to be signed. Scumbag goobers IMHO, I would ignore them too. All that for another man's ink squiggles, pretty weird.

These goofs were all over NYC. These are the same clowns who yell nonstop insults or begging embarrassingly at them. Listen to the Toppix videos on youtube. Horrible some of the things they yell.

The young runners are just as bad.....especially the Asian kids I ran across. Plain ruthless out there. I used to laugh when they got singled out and ignored.

Sorry, but this is not issue about where you ask them to sign, but this is about how..... You are talking about autograph hunters who sells their signed items for money - it´s part of their income obviously.... Their behaviour is absolutely disgusting and absolutely disgraceful. Real fans act very differently and I would like to differ between fans (who are able to make welcome event for bands at the airports) and these vultures and they act like this everywhere - so it doesnt matter whether you talk about hotel, airport, venues, wherever.... This is sad part of autograph business - and this is reason why many artists are not giving autographs anymore, fans with respectful behaviour are not reason!

Can't imagine doing it as a fan, unless it was someone I HAD to have.  I only ever really want the autographs of people I'm personally a big fan of, and I can't imagine trying to intercept someone I genuinely like to the airport.  Really strikes me as a non-fan/Ebay seller type move for the most part.  The last thing I want to do is have an experience where I piss someone I like off or weird them out.

I never "graphed" at an airport but back in the day through a small network of buddies in Philly  we would hang outside of hotels and bs for a while waiting for stars to come out. There would be no more than 5 people and we were polite and only dared ask for 1 or 2 items. The modern vultures accost people then curse them when they don't sign, nothing I would ever be apart of . I  know there are still decent people out there but it must be a real pain with the aggressive E-Bay animals.

Would you rather have people getting authentic autographs in person, regardless of where they are obtained, or people selling fake autographs?  My philosophy is an autograph is an autograph wherever it is obtained.  I honestly think that being bothered at a hotel or restraunt or hotel is a small price to pay for never having to worry about where the rent money is coming from or how you are going to put food in your kid's mouth.

I have a problem if these antics start ruining it for actual fans who want to meet these people and get their autograph.

I live close to Canton, and every year during Hall of Fame week the main hotel down town puts up barriers on either side of the main entrance.  Guys bring their chairs and set out there all weekend.  I usually go for a couple of hours for 2 or 3 days.  The athletes know what to expect.  Sometimes they come over and sometimes they don't.  This past year, John Madden got out of his bus and signed for 2 people.  When are you ever going to get Madden?  He has never done a show.  In talking with the normal graphers that are there, usually 90% of the Hall of Famers will come over and sign at some point during the weekend.  You just have to be there at the right time.  Sometimes the autograph isn't as good as what you would pay for at a show, but sometimes it is. So I have no problem going to a hotel.

Recently, I started to get musicians.  I collect for myself- I do not sell anything but I am willing to trade.  Again, I think musicians know that there are going to be be people at the hotel waiting for an autograph.  In Cleveland, hotel security comes out when an artist arrives or leaves.  If the artist says ok, security will let you approach them, if not, then you can't get close.  I have no problem with that.  I went to the hotel when a bunch of artists came to town for the Everly Brothers tribute concert.  Graham Nash was great, as was Vince Gill and Peter Asher.  However, Alison Krause wouldn't let you get close.  It was her choice and I have no problem with that.  I hate when people think that you are "owed" an autograph just because you see them in person.  I actually had nothing for Vince, Peter or Alison- I just wanted Graham Nash and was happy to get him.

As long as you are respectful, not pushy or vulgar, I have no problem waiting at a hotel for someone.  I'm not sure if I would go to an airport though.

I haven't graphed anywhere other than the venue, but I would if I had to have someone. Part of the fun of getting the graph is the chase. I get there are ebay sellers, but the ego of some of the celebs are ridiculous. Most are set for life, if they could make someone $50 doing something as little as signing their name, taking only 10 seconds, then what's the problem? Stars were turning people down before ebay was around. It's purely an ego thing.
