So, when & why did President Carter change his signature from "Jimmy Carter" to "J. Carter"?

Not sure when it happened. But it was probably just to make all his book signings a little easier.
Oh, and at least I can say for sure, he was signing the "J" way around 1995, because that's when I met him at a book signing at a church in Overland Park, Kansas, and he signed two books for me that way. Then a man came up and dumped about 10 baseballs on the table, and President Carter signed every one for this "collector". Carter was super friendly with everyone.
Shortly after he left the presidency...he signed his memoir Keeping Faith to me in 1983 as J Carter.
