Hi,

recently puchased autographs on large photos from Robin Williams, Michael Douglas and Sean Connery.

I'm questioning the authenticity of those signatures but have no experience in that field. Does somebody have an opinion on that matter?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Regards,

Peter

I would say no to the Connery and Williams straight away to be honest. They are somewhat and I stress somewhat close to what they should be, but nevertheless, I am not liking them and the alarm bells are ringing already.

I didn't look at Michael since I am not an expert on Michael Douglas so hopefully, someone else will be able to help you. Sean is one which is also the subject of much forgery attempts, along with Harrison Ford. Getting a genuine one of either can sometimes prove a tough assignment but if you look in the right places, hopefully you can get a genuine piece of each.

I'm not saying for definite these are forgeries of Sean and Harrison but I'm not liking them and I think personally you can do better elsewhere for a genuine piece of each. Lots of other factors come in, such as how much did you pay, should be a good indicator of whether or not an item is likely to be genuine or not.

Hi Robin,

many thanks for your reply.

That private collector I've purchased those autographs from had thousands of autographs from Hollywood, astronauts, politicians etc. that he collected during his lifetime, or so he claimed. Those photos appear to be old anyway so they must be lieing around for quite some time.

He charged me about 40 - 60 euros each on a local flee market. He had a story for each of them as he claimed to have them collected all by himself. Probaply a very well made up story teller. He stressed that all signatures are all genuine.

I'm such a fool.

Hey DrakesFortune,

Obviously somewhere along the line, the seller has constructed these forgeries in the masses and selling them on - not especially bright if you can try to sell them online at premium prices, but there you go, probably doesn't want too much attention to his scam to avoid being prosecuted, perhaps, too, so just probably erring on the side of caution.

Old photos don't necessarily mean the autograph is not real as anything can be signed, regardless of age, I guess it depends whether or not the artist wishes to sign the said item. Its hit and miss with what people decide to sign.

Another point is, unless the dealer is someone who can be trusted to a degree where you feel comfortable with them, don't ever take a story of acquirement at face value. Also, at a market, I think you always need to have the red flag prominent because you know such items are going to go at a somewhat considerably lower price. Always cause for alarm in my opinion. I'm not saying you can't find a bargain, but I wouldn't buy from said places.

Furthermore, 40-60 Euros would be a MAJOR alarm bell - I mean, Sean Connery would probably go for a lot more than 60 Euros, probably up to six times. Robin Williams also would also command a considerably higher value now due to his sad passing and Michael Douglas I would say 2-3 times what the seller was asking.

You are not a fool. Its all part of a learning curve. Everyone gets done mate.

All 3 are pretty crude and roughly drawn to resemble the autographs, but none of these would be in my collection.

Hi Pete,

from your avatar icon I take you might be familiar with Marlon Brando? I came across that there might be many different signatures out there, most signed by his secretaries.

What do you make of this one?

Just a poor forgery.

Authentic & unquestionable Brando on a Godfather shot is about $10,000.

a PSA-DNA make-up chair shot is out there now for about that price, and I don't like it at all(hence the unquestionable comment.)

I agree with Pete.
