Signature looks legit, but I haven't seen him sign much in silver sharpie.  Any thoughts?  I would also like to know a bit more about his affiliation with Pennzoil and where this photo may have been acquired.  Anyone know if this could be from some kind of speaking engagement?

I'm not going to speak to the authenticity of the signature (I'd inquire with Steve about that, if you haven't already), but I wanted to address your concerns about the marker.

Scott Carpenter passed away quite (relatively) recently--less than 10 years ago. Among the Mercury 7, he was survived only by John Glenn.

In the many years prior to his passing, he would frequently make appearances and do signings & shows. He wasn't a "died before the Silver Sharpie was released" or "would only sign sparingly, with whatever pen was in his hand" situation.

As I said, I won't speak to the authenticity of the signature itself, but I can assure you that he was no stranger to the Silver Sharpie. You can see at least one in his pile here, from Spacefest 2007.
