I was wondering if any of you think it is necessary for me to obtain authentication to verify autographs I obtained years ago?  Baseball stars of the 50's, George Reeves, etc..Will appreciate any ideas on this as I am new to this...especially selling...thanks for any help.

Try www.isitreal.com For the modest fee you can obtain a professional opinion wich will be accepted by Ebay. Good luck! Dmitri.

George Reeves? Sweet.

I'd consign that to RR because they generally get the best prices on pieces like that and you don't have to pay an authentication fee for them to sell it.

Thank you, Brick.  I will look into RR..How does it compare to Heritage?

For an autograph like George Reeves, I'd say RR compares favorably. I don't know about baseball stars as that isn't my forte, but I'd certainly consider RR for the Reeves, they usually get top dollar for such stars, and Reeves is a very expensive autograph.

Hi Karen,

Brick is right. RR is a good auction house, and certainly a good choice for your George Reeves. They may not be the best choice for your baseball stars. You won't need to send your autographs to be authenticated unless you want to sell them yourself, like on eBay. And even then, you don't always need to. Sometimes it's not worth it.

If you'd like, send me a list and I'll review it and tell you what I think.

Steve

Thank you, Steve, I will put a list together. Very nice of you to make that offer.  I just asked Brick how RR compared to Heritage as I had been thinking about that house more so for  baseball cards and autographs from 50's.
All comments or suggestions are much appreciated.

Heritage is a very good auction house and I'd especially consider them for your sports.

RR has monthly auctions, they have a top-notch in-house authentication team and they guarantee the authenticity of what they sell. Many auction houses don't. That can translate in to higher prices. They are a great choice for classic Hollywood autographs.

Send me a list and I'll send you some suggestions.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for the infor.  So you say I  would not need to send autographs to the auction houses if they sell baseball and celebrity autographs for me on  consignment, right?  At one point when I thougtht to sell my 50's baseball cards, Heritage wanted me to send the cards first. I have about 130 baseball '52-'55 autographs, including some hall of famers and others, like:  Roberto Clementi, Stan Musial, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sal Maglie, etc..Autographs are in autograph books and again I personally obtained them.  After next week, I will try to scan lists..Which houses do you think would be the best??  Thanks much..

Sorry, Steve I found your new chat on auction houses, after my latest message to you.  I think it probably will tell it all if we get more personal experiences..If I create list of autogrpahs, would you have an email for me to send to?  Thanks for your patience with a bit of a novice on this..

Hi Karen,

Happy to help. You can email me at editor@autographmagazine.com.

Hi Karen,

You'll need to send the material to the auction house to sell them and some material needs to be seen in person to give a solid estimate. But you can generally choose the houses you're most interested in without sending the items in to be looked at. Autographs particularly. Unsigned baseball cards are extremely condition sensitive, so they'll need to be seen in-person. And unlike autographs they generally need to be graded by PSA or SGC to sell for top dollar.

Heritage is a good place for vintage baseball cards, but get a better idea of what you have before you ship anything to anybody.

Hi Steve,

This is valuable information esp on  autographs.  I will focus on autogrpahs but keep cards in mind too.  5 years ago, before caring for mother, I was going to Chicago to have cards graded when PSA was in town.  Talked to Heritage and as I recall they said they would grade cards if they were going to sell them..Now that you verify Heritage for cards, maybe I will get back in touch with them on cards.  I will copy my hand written card  lists as well.  My concern is that it is so easy to substitute a card that is unsigned once you send them..My concern is that I am taking up too much of your time so please advise..Many thanks for all your kind  help.
