Authenticity Opinion of MJ MTV Award Statue for 1984 Thriller on Sanders Auction Block

I am doing a research for a friend about MJ's MTV Award that is currently up for auction at Sanders.  That particular MTV award is from 1984. The auction house have listed the award as 7 pounds 11 ounces. However, Information from other sources are indicating the early MTV award statues from 1984 to mid 90s are lighter in weight and not as heavy as indicated.

I have contacted both the trophy manufacture and MTV directly. But none have any data sheets for the early version of the trophy because there were no saved computer records back in 1984. The only record they have is for the current version, which is 7 pounds 3 ounces.

From what I have learned, both the early and newer version were never this heavy (i.e. 7 pounds 11 ounces)

I am hoping someone here can point me to the right direction or have information on the actual weight of the early version of the statue from 84, 85, etc.

Thanks in advance,

I've looked all over the web---and so far I can't find anything other than the one google page we talked about in chat (which I'll post for folks here).  http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=250315 which is approximately the same weight (but note when this was written-- for those reading)

As well as the Juliens auction it was previously sold in last year.  https://www.julienslive.com/view-auctions/catalog/id/72/lot/28809/

It sure took a beating though since the last auction with the flag all bent up.  I'd like to know how they expect it to go over 100,000, when it sold for 40,000 in better shape just 9 months ago.  (51,200 after fees)

Here is the article stating it is expected to fetch around 100,000  http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Michael-Jackson-MTV-Moonman...

Thanks, Wascher, for the research and update. Hopefully someone here may have access or know of someone with the early version that can take a scale and weight it.

From what I have learned, the statue gained weight after each improvements were done. First major improvements were done after late 90s and became 7 pounds 3 ounces. The new company that took over the manufacturing in 08 did additional improvements as well. But still below the 7 pounds 11 ounces.

I dont know if this is the same one or not, but you might want to check back at the Julians MJ thread on this site, where the Bush forgeries (in my opinion)  were exposed that Julians sold. In that thread (im pretty sure), the MJ fans brought up a large buyer of MJ memorabilia somewhere over seas. Apparently he is selling his items in one lump group and had them on display somewhere. When MJ experts went in and examined them, including a music award (at least one), they found that some of his items were fakes. They were purchased from some guy ( i forget the name, but i think he was from Canada), i can find you the name if necessary, who apparently had some theoretical link to MJ. Apparently he has sold a ton of bad items including awards. Anyway, this collector, who was very well off, was told about the facts that proved this his MJ award was fake, and he stated that if it was fake that this guy owed him several hundred thousand dollars. The MJ fans went above and beyond proving that that award was a fake and worth nothing. I mean they proved it without a shadow of a doubt. And i believe this same guy is still trying to sell bad mJ merchandise to this day to unsuspecting customers.

I would be very very careful. I dont know if this item is the same one i was talking about above, but it proves that MJ awards can easily be faked. Especially if they came from the same source as the MJ award discussed above. And after knowing what happened with the Julians Bush auction, i personally wouldnt look twice at it. After the tragedy that occurred at that auction, where a great number of Michael Bush signed MJ items (in my opinion) were sold to the public as real MJ items, i will never trust them again. But thats just me.

You might want to reach out to the MJ fans from other threads as they would be a tremendous resource if you are interested in the award. Im sure they could get to the bottom of it.

I told William yesterday to go read the Bush thread :) for some interesting reading, and how I felt personally about Julien's after that fiasco.

However, that award you mentioned wasn't in the Bush auction thread, but is located in this thread here:   http://live.autographmagazine.com/forum/topics/michael-jackson-fake...

I did look up this award yesterday though and it is an award that truly was something he won.  He won 3 that yr.  People's choice,  Best choreography, and Best Overall Performance video.

This award was actually the one in Julien's though - as a close up of Julien's and this one show the same "knick" above the label, so it was def the same one that was in Juien's auction first.

Thanks, Wascher, for your input as well. It does look the same as the one was in Julien's auction. I just hope there is a way to find out who the original owner/seller that cosigned the item with Julien.

Thank you, Carl, for your input.  I am going to visit the other threads. Thanks.
