Hi all, I'm new to this and would very much value your opinions on this signature I obtained in person at the Canadian Grand Prix from Lewis Hamilton. I didn't notice until later that the ink is broken in places and particularly missing from the loops of the signature.
I don't know if this is just due to him signing it quickly or if I've smudged it somehow?? I know it's not worth much but I guess this depreciates its value?
Thanks in advance!

Hello, while there appears to be some hairlines etc I don't think you did anything those look like normal pen skips from quick signing. Both occur at the tops of loops - unlikely you smudged just those areas ;)
Hi Eric, thanks for your reply!
Yes I was hopeful that I hadn't ruined it by accident! Do normal pen skips affect an autographs value? Also, what do you mean by hairlines etc?
Hello again Amy :)
Happy to help and welcome.Normal pen skips unless really bad should not be a problem - some occur frequently in the same spots with some signers. Hairlines are little tiny scratches that go through the ink revealing the "white" photo underneath. It is caused by abrasion from other photos, papers etc. Is it stored in a protective sleeve?
Ah I see, thanks! It is in a protective sleeve now but before in the panic of the moment I probably did rub it against other photo cards :/
I imagine 'touching-up' the hairline scratches is a big no-no?
You are 100% correct! DON'T! :) You'd "kill" it. Enjoy as is - you got it yourself!!
Haha I thought so! Do small scratches like that depreciate value just out of interest? Kicking myself now for not being more careful!
Things tend to happen with IP (In Person) signatures. The artist can smudge it himself, it can be rushed obviously, you can get jostled and wrinkle the photo if not on a clipboard, it could rain (!)...so with IP autographs there is often something. Hairlines can also be acquired over time from storage in one album, then another sleeve, etc. As far s value that is case by case - whose signature in what pen and how old and what is it on etc.for hairlines etc. Some things can get hairlines very easily.
The flaking/spotting seen in the enlargement (which I just realized was available, sorry) suggests the marker and paper did not quite fall in love with each other causing some adhesion problems. You likely caused very little change to this graph yourself, probably less than 50% :)
Ah so I can blame Lewis for not having the right pen then ;)
Thanks again, I feel a better now that it wasn't totally my fault :) Hoping to frame it as a gift so fingers crossed the recipient won't mind the imperfections!
Blame the paper, it's easier ;) and you are most welcome .
Framing! Please, be sure to have a mat cut or find a precut one in your framing shop. You do NOT want to autograph to touch the glass when framed.
You know, it is likely a standard size photo so you should be able to buy a ready made frame, a mat and the glass in one shot at a craft store. Ask the framer how to affix the photo to the mat properly and you are set. He/she might even affix it for you. I would :)
Good thinking! As it's a gift I was planning on going to a frame shop and getting it done properly there with a mount and a plaque or something underneath :)
Well, if you find what I described with the mat you'll save a pretty penny :)
Which you can use to get a little plaque ;)
