All autographs contain similar traits when they are signed by the same person.  The greatest challenge is for autograph collectors to recognize what these traits are.  That is the best reply that I can give without sounding fake.

Mike gave a perfectly good answer. Stop writing in Caps and if you don't like the answer don't make up topics where you don't want opinions.

Would be the only answer I'd give you. Mike is 100% right except in the eyes of dopes who have bought BARGAINS off EBAY who later finds out the money he saved was because he bought forgeries. I'm betting that's you.

Dear Ryan , you seem to have a chip on your shoulder , Yes they can be damn close,, as you put it ,but you have it wrong,, If I was to forge  a sig,You my friend would not know or see the difference, A good forger would not make that mistake ,The whole Idea is to make it look perfect , But as I said no one signe"s the same every time , So which one is the fake .????

Vicent, Ryan did a discussion on don mattingly real & fake autos, so in his head he's an expert! Until someone showed another autograph(obtained in person) that was different and he didn't ever see that one! But hey he's an expert that can post a silly photo like were in high school!

You'll never get thru to these people that have responded but with silly childish answers! It's like a little groupie autograph collective between the ones that responded(minus one or two), whom think they know everything! On other threads its the same thing. You can't ask a simple question without getting the gang to gang up...even thou the all caps thing is annoying...instead of a person giving a hostile answer of turn the all caps off or go else where??? Really? Why not just be an adult and say could you please turn off the all caps, no that would be to easy! So then they say by your tone..see how they easily flip things around like your the bad guy but you asked a SIMPLE question that should get SIMPLE answers, however you see simple isn't in anyone's vocabulary with some in this thread!

You are correct in that not all autos are the same however their are certain traits similar to people's autographs(as stated)! However to many elements go into a situation while someone's signing an autograph ie sitting down at a show, crowded by 20 auto hounds, getting bumped into while signing an autograph, in a hurry, etc.

They did an article in the NY Tymes last year that was about autographs and how athletes that collect ask other athletes or whomever for a good autograph ie better than what they give the public! And those athletes got a different autograph than you, I, or anyone else would get! So their will definitely be different strokes for different folks!! Heck, my game-used items that I've received from the same athlete but at different times I got two different signatures with the second being better than the first because I had built a relationship with that athlete!

These people who claim they study autographs are full of themselves. It's their opinion so take it with a grain of salt. Just like these third parties authenticating..if people are claiming that 50% of the stuff they authenticate might be right, might be wrong then why do people still use them? Just cause their the leader in the industry?? All I know is my stuffs been signed in person and don't need someone's opinion!

I joined this site hoping their wouldn't be those "guys", that you are obviously seeing are responding but they are everywhere. Guys that can hide behind a computer with their 2 cents! Having a civil conversation on a topic is beyond people these days. Everyone has some agenda but its always someone else's fault and not theirs!

My suggestion would be just to stop following the thread or just ask that it be deleted. It's not worth the headache these guys try to create! And it's sad that a site your suppose to be able to come and ask opinions which you did, gets a smart azz response for the first one! Not that this is a bad site as their are good people but as you can see a higher education wasn't evolved in many!

And not ALL autographs contain the same traits otherwise Ryan would have known in his teaching lesson about don mattingly he would have known the autograph that someone posted that he didn't seem to ever see!

Like I state below and it's been on other threads...to many things go into an autograph situation...sitting down, walking, 20 people around them..one bumps the player, etc!

Vincent please stop with the ALL CAPS, it's incredibly annoying. From the tone of your post, no one will be able to change your mind so I'm not sure why you are even seeking answers to begin with. But yes, even though "no two signatures are the same" they can still be damn close and share many characteristics. For those of us who study particular signatures, it is incredibly obvious when something is "way off" and a forgery... Yes, the person could've been signing drunk/stoned/half asleep/rushed, whatever, but those are typically just excuses forgery sellers try and use.

Other characteristics can be a dead giveaway such as pen speed. Sign your name like you normally would. Now sign your name very slowly. You will notice the ink looks different, it's thicker, shakier, and does not flow properly. This can be a tell-tale sign, as forgers are typically signing slow and trying to be very careful not to make a mistake as this is not a natural motion for them.

Here is an example of a very slowly signed Don Mattingly forgery. See how shaky/thick/slowly signed it is? Don would never sign something this slow:

Can you really not see a difference between these? The Ted Williams may be a little harder, but the Mantle's are way different... The top ball are forgeries,bottom is authentic:

dang that forgery is pretty close to "a degree".  but as i feel i understand sports specifically....that bottom williams has to be towards the end of his time on this earth?  the mantle is a classic banana style.  

now that mattingly is hilarious!  that is ungodly fake!  who would even fake a mattingly card?? you can get a signed ball for what a baseball is worth
