We recently bought ann 18th century desk, and found an inscription "Dolly Batchelder" on one of the interior drawers. I began researching Dolly and found there were a few women of that name, all part of an extended family.
I would like the opinion of the group about whether these two signatures are by the same woman. The one obvious difference is the spelling of Batchelder, but I've learned the spelling varied among family members at different times. Thanks. Jane in NH

Thanks for responding. I think the capital D and the capital B are just too similar and idiosyncratic to have been done by different women.
Let us not forget the substrates in play here - that could account for some things.
