Hello,

I am new to this site and forum and am hoping there are members who can help shed some light on a signed piece in my possession. It is a signed David Bowie Scary Monsters album cover. It has an accompanying COA from CO Authentications based in the UK with the authenticator name L. Bore. Researching the company and authenticator has raised serious doubts along side the aesthetic quality of the signature. My only intent in posting a photo is to get member feedback as to whether this signature is or isn't that of David Bowie's.

Any opinions on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

Eric,

Thank you for the heads up on this. Been pretty wrapped up work-wise so these signatures can be a bit difficult to navigate given their short listings. As you stated; the criterion for the signature I am looking for has me channeling some serious patience and I appreciate the aforementioned list. The search continues though. Ebay seems to be the best 50/50 chance if the provenance is there and the research is applied. Have my sights set on a certain LP and am almost ready to make an offer. More research first though...

Hi Seth,

Thank you! I am pleased you enjoyed them. For some reason I can not reply to your latest "Scary" post. I like them both (dates?) - first is perhaps nicest to me from what I can see. I would certainly seek another opinion but those look OK. Wish they were pinned/held down with a date - kind of like a string on a balloon. As for the "B" shape - I have concluded he was suggesting the profile of an acoustic guitar! Reasonable, no?

That quote in that frame - I watched him say that after we all sang Happy Birthday :)

Now nearly 20 years have gone by. I wish he were still producing, but I'll tell you - I am so proud of that man and how he handled his demise. The last - Blackstar video - extremely dense - tops in any publicly accepted medium. Or being sucked into that wardrobe in Lazarus (as in The Lion, Witch and the wardrobe (change) etc..) - he goes, trying to stay, but he goes without blinking.

Eric

Eric,

Guitar shape indeed. That makes complete sense. And I agree with you entirely with Blackstar and Lazarus. Words spoken for me. It has left an impression on me and i am happy to see on countless others as well. It will reverberate through the decades upon centuries. Blackstar as an album is very special for myself personally.

I'm glad to hear of your thinking the two LP's look somewhat legit. The first one in blue ink, upon google searching "accompanying info", raises some questions while the second raises none. So with that it is a waiting game of what to do next. The aforementioned price point and what to pay is right there after whether it appears to be more legit than not.

Lastly; in lieu of all that's going on with "top" authenticators in the industry, are there any you recommend I use over others? I am finding it extremely difficult as to know who to rely upon and whose letting bias control their decisions. Thank you again for your time in this.

Kind regards,

Seth

Hi Seth,

I could talk for hours about the symbolism of Blackstar. I have written quite a bit but more to go. Re authenticators, I don't name names - just signatures. If you look at who says what and why you might gain insight for a Reliable Expert. Papers and opinions make up perhaps 49% of my mind at most? Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less. When I need help I certainly ask. I am very fond of who I use for assistance/guidance. I just find names in general can change the course of a discussion somerimes. Sometimes it is a large thing I need help with, others it is a confirmation or the like. I also use my eyes and my own knowledge for good or not - it is my $. To paraphrase a former president, "I am the decider" - for better or worse - I have to live with it. As far as choice of image, a tricky thing, you have done what I would - Scary Monsters. The guitar solo in Teenage Wildlife alone...and those vocals...but his appearance is sterling. Especially the last images with messed up makeup and cigarette. Only a few covers are this strong. Obviously, Outside is a weakness as I saw that live, but it is a tremendous work (The Motel for example). The happiest I ever saw him with recent/new material was Earthling I believe. You little wonder you! ;)

Best wishes,

                   Eric

I note that seller of the first Scary LP offers returns on some of his Bowie's, not on others. For what that is worth. The seller of mine had multiples - good material and also forgeries. Several of the Scary Monster sellers larger items, band signed stuff, have no return policy in private auctions. This seller also has one negative feedback from an item that did not pass Rock & Roll authentication (toolhaus.org).

For these reasons, I suggest an Expert to Render an opinion.

I also note start of $400 and Buy it Now of $1000 - indicates something.

Eric

Hi again Seth,

I ran into this list of things to think about when considering an autograph purchase.

In no order here are some things I think about:

Original/virgin /untrimmed photo/item (no tape, folds spots, restoration etc – considering item/age/other factors)?

Vintage as possible?

Is the autograph contemporary to the photograph or added later?

Best condition possible (considering above etc.)?

Best quality photo (1st generation/original release/candid)/”Official” item”/product (album, CD, ticket, promo, key photo etc.)?

Best inscription (if any possible)/dedication/dated?

Fountain, ballpoint or fiber/felt? Pencil?

Optimal contrast/placement? Ink color clash with item/image?

Clear example/preferably no smudging from signing/fading/etc.?

What else can I buy with this amount of $?

Recent auction/sale results for like material?

Is the signature interesting/unusual/unique without the photo/item?

Frequency of items with comparable presentation?

Comparison to similar for quality - mediocre or exceptional?

How does this fit in with other items I have collected using similar criterion? Display?

It the item is too big? Small? Is the autograph lost or overpowering?

Best wishes,

                   Eric
