Tony texted me about this earlier and I tried to share it a status a few minutes ago. Pretty big deal! I thought it was interesting that Eli wanted to keep some of his stuff (which I would think he would have the right to do...). Also STEINER is involved in this which is bad for them...
This is why I NEVER trust "game used" stuff, especially the "game used cards" that fetch a lot of money.
I hate those "game used" cards on so many levels.
Yup, I have several Mattingly ones just because I do think they are cool looking, but I have never once believed that they are actually "game used" jersey slices.
I see Mantle/Maris/Ruth/Gehrig "game used" cards fetch $500-$1000 easy over a half inch piece of cloth. In fact, I'd be more angry if they actually were game used by these people, because that means someone destroyed a jersey of the Babe!
Yeah, I hated them for those two reasons. One, you can't possibly prove one way or another whether this was authentic. Second, you actually shredded a Babe Ruth jersey to create an awful, boring, manufactured collectible?!
The problem with game used memorabilia is there is always a "middle man", and there is always a business mindset to keep costs as low as possible...
Here is one for a mere $4,000:

In Ron Keurajian's book "Baseball Hall of Fame autographs", he said that he spoke with Joe Sewell one time and asked if he had any old bats he had used in the big leagues. Joe's response was that once your bat was cracked it was used as kindling wood. He never saved any of his bats. Bobby Doerr also said something similar: Bat boys threw them out, I never kept mine. Players did not care about broken bats.
Can't believe anyone would pay $4000 for that!
The idea that ex-players have tons of their old game worn jerseys/bats/batting gloves laying around the house to sell to Topps/Upper deck is ridiculous... I'm sure they have some, which they probably would like to hang on to, or hand down to family members. Also, how many would WANT to sell them to be cut up in to pieces?
If they wanted to sell, I would think they could sell it as a whole for more than Topps/UpperDeck are wanting to pay for it to chop it up...
The Babe Ruth "game worn" cloths above could literally be from a wash cloth.
I'm going to ask some ball players about this the next time I'm getting autographs.
+1
If true, what a scum organization. Hard to imagine how these guys get unholy piles of cash thrown at them and still feel a need to rip off their fans.
I bet this is just the tip of the iceberg and other teams do this as well...
I bet there are many teams and players that do this.
