Checking some old auction results I came across a letter that sold for nearly 7 thousand dollars back in 2014. It sold through a highly respected auction house in Dallas Texas
I've included two images below. It's a typed letter on 20 Century Fox letter head addressed to R.C.A. record executive Steve Sholes. The letter purports to be from Elvis Presley.
But is it ??
I have a suspicion that this letter is the work of the European master forging community. The Elvis autograph by itself is a carbon copy of their handiwork...the red "stamps" at the bottom of the letter are another ploy they use to lend authenticity to their creation.
But the biggest issue here is the date on the letter. On August 12 -- 1956 Elvis was giving an afternoon and evening performance in New Orleans. He wasn't within a thousand miles of Hollywood. And yet we've got 20th Century Fox letterhead and the signatures of his two co stars Richard Egan and Debra Paget in his first movie Love Me Tender.
How the hell did that happen ??
For the record Elvis didn't begin work on Love Me Tender until August 22nd.
If this IS real I will apologize to all of you and fall on my sword...no problem...
You can all kick my ass around the block...
But as has been stressed here by a handful of members...the master forgers are very very good at their work...but not perfect...This item fooled a MAJOR auction house and a dedicated buyer. The auction house has been duped...And I am sorry to have to write that last sentence but it's true...
I invite everyone who has any interest to please comment...
My thanks...
Don

is that what Elvis' signature looked like in 1956? I thought it was less flamboyant back then. I share everyone's suspicion here.
That second faint y at the end of Presley could be a forgers guidline that could not be fully erased or it could be a ink run out? It doesn't look messy enough to be a ink run out in my opinion.
Thanks everyone for your contributions...
Looking back at the auction listing again today I realized I had never fully read the auction description of this item...
And I'm more concerned now than before because this piece comes with a letter of authenticity from Rich Consola...
That is truly worrisome...
