Donley Auctions announced Thursday (Aug. 9) that it will be auctioning off dozens of items owned by rock icons like Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Janis Joplin, Mick Fleetwood and more. There will be a preview event for the collection, which is titled “Grateful Dead & Rock & Roll,” on Sept. 7 at Donley's headquarters in Union, Ill., and items can be previewed here.
Many of the items being auctioned belonged to Dead employees Annette Flowers and Sue Stephens, as well as the Dead’s personal filmmaker and producer Len Dell'Amico. In addition to signed posters and documents, the collection also includes Garcia’s death certificate; the duster overcoat worn by the band in the “Throwing Stones” music video; personal canceled checks signed by Garcia; Garcia’s personal rolodex; and a Fender Squier guitar signed by Weir.
"I recall meeting with Garcia in the kitchen at the Dead office in San Rafael to talk about some of the production design aspects of our video for 'Throwing Stones,'" Dell'Amico said in a statement emailed to Billboard. "We had this dystopian burnt-out future set that had a huge windowless wall for a 30 by 50-foot mural background. I asked Garcia about his ideas for what we could put on it. He thought for a moment, then said, 'Hand me a napkin,' which I did. In the next 10 minutes he sketched out this frightening image of some kind of monster robot wielding barbed wire and menacing all who dared look up at him.
"I did my best to hide my awe, took the napkin, got on the phone with my production manager, and within two days we had a company willing to take on the task of transferring this image onto the huge wall," Dell'Amico continued. "And they delivered! It was amazing. And that’s what I was thinking about when I decided to put up for auction one of the Australian duster coats that the band wears in front of the mural in the video, along with a signed photo of that moment.”
