an original & authentic James Cagney;

awesome

Thanks DB

here is a 1980 original and authentic James Cagney
It has a lot of diffrences. But it also has a lot of same letters. The S in Saul in both personalizations are Identical .

Deeb: Nice one.

 I keep wondering how ole Saul had all these photos around all the time.

Bob,

Where are the exemplars from? For future note, be careful with autographs in the old AC Authentication Guide from 1999. We pulled it from the stores and destroyed the stock shortly after we bought the company back in 2004. Too many questionable signatures. I think a lot of the same ones were used in the AC Price Guide, too...at least 3rd edition back. And they were used in the magazine's signature page in the back of each issue until then, too. There were lots of good autographs, but a lot that, when I had them checked out, turned out to be questionable. They were all originally from the authentication guide.

Steve...

The Exemplars are from Steve Raab

The contact below from my collection

The R&R Cagneys were signed by two different people (as were the Reagans).
I agree.  the G's are off.

It would appear to me that Cagney had terrible penmanship based on his Original (in his own hand circa 60) and not much better in the 1980's example provided by Bob.   I find it hard to fathom how or when the "flourish" developed but if you buy the 1939 example it was there all the time.  If that were the case then there appears to be similarities  but one has to wonder based on his originals (even if standing) if his handwriting could improve to such flourish.

time for a new signature study there Zipper.

Here is one from AW.  The signature here seems authentic based on the one I UL earlier;
