My Father James Garner has had several different evolving signatures throughout his long life and career.  Especially since he changed his name from "Bumgarner" to "Garner"

Obviously, I have my own authentic examples and I know that there are a limited amount of REAL SIGNATURES mostly from the 70's and 80's, as he was very popular then and didn't like to sign them. I know that his secretary, "THE SELF-APPOINTED FORGER"  signed a bunch of them.

His signature has also changed a bit as he has gotten older.

The only way to know for sure, is if you saw him sign it with your own eyes but,

I can tell which one's are real and which one's are not ;)

I think the signature from a "ROCKFORD" picture with the certificate looks real and the one from "UP PERISCOPE" looks real as well.

The very top one looks odd because of the capital "G" but it would depend what the signature was on. It looks very old but, I don't remember him signing our last name with thay kind of capital "G". I could always go back and do some comparisons.

Hi Guys...

Thank you for kind words. My Dad never liked or understood the AUTOGRAPH thing that went with his job but, he always did his very best to sign them anyway.

Just so you know,  I came to this site because I have a google alert on my Dad's name. His book is coming out very soon and all shall be revealed. I am very motivated to continue my Father's legacy and I would like to clear up any misconceptions or at least to try to answer any questions if can.

But I have a question of my own ...I am very curious as to how you would have access to some of these old documents.......   Where did you find these?

If you would like to email me directly you can email me at mavrock1@aol.com.

The top one was signed by Jess S. Morgan, our business manager, who sadly just died 3 Saturdays ago.

Thanks ;)

Hi Gigi,

I'm sorry to hear about Jess Morgan's passing. It looks like Greg got all or most of these from Gallery of History, aka www.historyforsale.com. Their prices are often 10x what most people charge, or more.

They have tons of James Garner pieces available. Signed contracts and letters but mostly photos. If you go www.historyforsale.com and type your dad's name into the search box, you'll get perhaps 100 or more of his items.

Would you mind telling us who you think signed these?

Hummmmmm    ...It it hard to tell with these. The "J" in the top one looks very different but, the other one's look pretty good.

If he was signing them in a rush, trying to sign on a weird surface or signing a ton of them at a time, that may make them look different.

His secretary started signing them in the ROCKFORD FILES era of the 70's-

If you sent away to his office somewhere to get an autograph, there is a chance that she signed it.

I can tell you that if you have a signature with a metallic colored pen like silver, it is legit ;)  He likes those metallic pens!

Hi Gigi, does your dad sign Through the mail currently from his own address? People have been getting successes and I was wondering what do you think of them?

This is one of the current successes

Thank you so much. Your dad is one of my favorite actors!! I loved all his movies very much:)

He is an American Icon! Glad to hear from you and Welcome!

Good input, Mike.

A lot of celebs have variations of their signatures depending on whether they're for fan or social purposes or legal and business purposes. The ones James Garner signed for Gigi are close to the PSA/DNA ones. And the PSA ones are also close to the 1977 contract signature except for the "G".

Gigi...you've got my interest piqued. Would you mind telling us the story of your dad's secretary, "The self-appointed forger?" And thanks again for joining us here. It's not just helpful, it's a treat.

Have Autopens been popular with stars? I thought it was mostly preprints and secretarials.
NO COMMENT .........ON THE GROUNDS THAT I MAY INCRIMINATE MYSELF ;(

Gigi Will he be signing his book when it comes out? Will he sign it thru the mail if sent to him?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I am afraid not  ;(
