I retract my statement about not having doubts that the three signatures on the left were signed by Whitten. I do believe that all four were sent in at the same time, but perhaps back in 2006 (or at least prior to July of 2012). Is that possible?
Here is an authentic signed piece to compare with the books. I did a side by side comparison with several book examples as the "J's" in the books looked strange to me. I have not personally made a 100% decision on the signed books but can say this J compares favorably to many of the books.
Also, does someone have a sample of Whitten's own signature?
Would it be correct to say that Whitten forms the letter J beginning with a downstroke on the descender, and Jerry Lee signs the J from the top like most people do? The pickguard that Chad posted shows the overlapping of lines very well and the direction of the signature. Also note that there is a bit of a dot at the bottom of the Whitten descender shown above. It could be written off as a quirk in this one signature, but look at how many of the Barnes & Noble signatures also have a blemish in the same part of the J.
I think you can clearly see the similarites to Whitten's signature that Ballroom posted and the Whitten signed Jerry Lee autographs that Roger posted. To my eye, the thanks and the formation of the J are the same.
You can compare them easier now that they are on the same page in the thread, and come to your own conclusion.
Here are a couple more pick guards that I was told were signed the same day. I think there are common characteristics among the six signatures, but all don't share all of the same characteristics. I think these two signatures further tie the previous four together and support the claim of the person who obtained the signatures that all were sent in at the same time.
In looking at the zoomed image on the PSA/DNA authenticated guitar on the PSA website, I feel that it has strong characteristics of an authentic JLL signature. Based on this and research done elsewhere, it appears that rather than Whitten proxy signatures, it’s acutally JLL signatures that are being compared to the book signatures.
By authentic, you mean witnessed in person by you or the person who got it? That to me is the only way to claim authenticity it seems.
If you are referencing the pic guard, I have a photo of him holding it while signing. That and the signature characteristics are good enough for me.
Yes. Thank you,
