Feb. 4: We're expanding and reorganizing our discussion forums. We should be finished this weekend.

Excuse our dust.

I never noticed it but look above Kinki's head. There is a dual language sign meaning "Dog." Kinski nicknamed himself "Mr. Mad Dog" at the time this photo was taken at Cannes in 1980 - the year of Nosferatu and Woyzeck. Among many other incidents, Herzog famously threatened to shoot Kinski (and then himself) if Kinski walked off the set of Aguirre. At one point Kinski nearly killed someone. In this "calm" candid, he’s still a coiled spring. Even with the cigarette, he looks like he's about to "bark" at the photographer. The autograph looks "shouted", like an assault on the paper.

These funny coincidences. The Kinski reminds me of this juxtaposition in a way - the ending scenes of Blacula. Prince Mamuwalde  (William Marschall) is willfully committing suicide (a film first) by walking into the daylight. I can't stop seeing that sign ;)

I asked Tariq Marshall if this was intended - he did not think so. Moments after this the Prince is smoldering.
