I never noticed it but look above Kinki's head. There is a dual language sign meaning "Dog." Kinski nicknamed himself "Mr. Mad Dog" at the time this photo was taken at Cannes in 1980 - the year of Nosferatu and Woyzeck. Among many other incidents, Herzog famously threatened to shoot Kinski (and then himself) if Kinski walked off the set of Aguirre. At one point Kinski nearly killed someone. In this "calm" candid, he’s still a coiled spring. Even with the cigarette, he looks like he's about to "bark" at the photographer. The autograph looks "shouted", like an assault on the paper.
