Hi All,

My first post....

A friend of mine obtained the following signature at an Obama rally last month & I am looking for opinions about authenticity. The signature is on a photo & my concerns are that it seems to have characteristics of an autopen.... Any opinions? Thanks....

Just realized I posted this in the wrong section...sorry...I will repost.

The autopen versions dont have curve on the "b" going down the middle of the O like your does.

Did they collect the items and take them to Obama to sign ?

I went for Obama during his first run at preisdent. They collected everything from the people waiting and when he came out they took it to his car and he signed everything . Only he was in the car , the guy waited outside of the car while he signed and handed it all back to everyone .

Your autograph looks good . But I am not even close to knowing Obama , other than the ones I got in person . Which has now been over 5 years.

Thanks for the response, Anthony. My friend said they collected everything before the event (he was a volunteer). I had book signed in 2008 and they took everything backstage. My book is spot on. What I don't like about this signature is the "evenness" of the signature. If you look closely at the writing the pen pressure is even throughout and a uniform width. Beginnings & endings of the letter strings are "blunt" where you would expect them to be thinner with more of a flow. Just looks unnatural to me....

I think its legit . I dont see any signs of autopen . Also why would they carry it around with them .
Did you happen to try to test the ink out . I notice the beginning of the B looks like it was erased . I know alot of ttm collectors test the ink out with alchol pr white eraser .

No...its just a very, very small smear or brush.

Being that Obama signs with his left hand . Its possible his hand or clothing ran threw the graph while signing.

I agree with that...I don't deal with signed photos very much and the lack of movement in the ink in this really spooked me. As I said before, the even application of ink and virtually no varience in the width of the pen stroke just looks odd. I guess the surface is to blame. I have been collecting for thirty years & am actually quite good with presidential material. This one just did not have the right "feel" to me.

If the question is whether this is an Autopen, I'd say no. I'm not aware of any in this style. But I'm not sure it's genuine. It looks more likely good than not, but it's different than his signature was the last time I studied it, which was in 2008-9.

Post a comment and link to this discussion on Michael Frost's profile. He's spent a lot of time studying Obama.

From seeing signed bills and letters signed in 2012 . I would say the autograph is not obamas . Maybe they have someone signing for him in the back .

Thanks, Steve. I went through Michael's website and was reading his reply as you were typing. Michael replied that the signature was likely genuine. Great forum here, very active community.

Thanks, Dennis. Please send Mike this link so he can join the discussion and post some exemplars.

It's authentic.
