As far as autograph collecting and music fan experiences goes, I find the range of stories I hear about various meet & greets to be pretty fascinating. I've heard of people paying modest fees (or nothing) for wonderful, fun experiences - and other stories of fans shelling out large amounts of money for a massive disappointment. And, of course, everything in between.

I thought we should have a comprehensive thread on the topic.  Have you been to a pre-show or post-show meet and greet or know someone who has? Was it a bargain or a ripoff? What was the mood - structured and hurried or casual and fun?

My favorite band does meet and greets at every headline show they perform on this tour, chosen at fandom by fans who sign up for their fanclub and enter the show-specific drawing. There is no charge, and (usually) I don't believe a show ticket is even required. They were asked about this in an interview early this tour, and the response from one of the band members, Martin, was pretty passionate about musicians who charge high prices for meet & greets. FYI: I get that this band isn't quite a household name yet, so there might be a sentiment of "Who are they to say . . ."  However they have an interesting perspective as both successful musicians with Top 10 records and huge music fans themselves).

Here's that portion of the interview:

I've never heard of Ozzy treating his fans badly, so I wouldn't put much stock into that account. Many times on recent tours I've seen him sign (free of charge) for everybody outside.

The most I've personally shelled out for a meet & greet has been for KISS. In their case the paperwork stipulated very clearly what was and wasn't included in the price. So going in I already knew I was entitled to 2 autographs per member (minimum).

The room was very cramped and things were running late. After the photo OP, we were told to stand in a row and wait for Paul and Gene to go past us signing as they went. Eric and Tommy basically had nothing to do while all this was happening and left before almost anybody had a change to even approach them as they were on the other side of the room behind all the security and crew people that were looking over the main guys.

I ended up getting 6 from Paul Stanley, 3 from Gene Simmons and none from Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. This was just fine by me, but I can imagine others were not so pleased.

The markers that the band had were some kind of horrible white paint pens, but luckily they agreed to switch to my marker.

The Ozzy incident sounded strange, because there's no way either he or his management could possibly expect to get away with that without an epic backlash.

I don't like bands like kiss charging this much for meet and greets, asking fans to pay a lot of money just to sign a few items shows how much they value there fans. All they really want is your money they don't give a s***  about you.

Again, it all comes down to how big a fan the person is and how much disposable income I suppose.

It's hard to give something like this any sort of "thumbs up" though.

I am confused why the two packages have such a big price range between the two? Am I missing something besides the one being in the first two rows and the other between 1-5? Also no Tommy Lee in the m&g is kind of a bummer.

Here's the link for the full comparison. The one on the left you get a fridge (?!) and a guitar and some other stuff.

Haha, thanks Rich. I looked it up. I hope they ship that stuff to you (especially the fridge) the guitar and litho is signed so that is a plus. I suppose if I was well off and care free and they were my favorite band then OK.

I still think for that much money you should have lunch with the band or something. I think these meet and greet packages are at the very least interesting.

These were really high priced but partially because they were able to up the price on the idea that this is the Final Tour. Nikki is awesome and really personable but I heard from other people that Vince and Mick seemed kind of distant. Also, Tommy Lee refuses to take part in these because he believes that fans should not have to pay to meet him. He would rather fans meet him outside at the buses or before the show, etc.

I was lucky enough to meet Nikki Sixx for free after his show with his new band Sixx:AM. He came out to the buses afterward and hung out with everyone. He was incredibly awesome and stopped at each of us, signed everything, listened to us, and took photos.

Vince has always been kind of distant. Mick and Tommy are cool, as long as the situation is right (which is rare). Nikki is alright, but much better to meet outside of Crue, of course.

Back when the reunion first happened 10 years ago, the meet & greets included the whole band and were very reasonably priced. Now they seem kind of pointless.

I'm not big on taking much video at these, as it almost feels a bit invasive.  But here are a few I took from the band in the interview in my first post, and a couple of "by the bus" informal meet and greets.  None are particularly long.

Very nice, have barely heard of Charlie XCX but the headware was hilarious.

It was actually a rough night for her. Vocal problems (and some tears on stage) led to a frustrating set for her.  We weren't sure whether she'd come out or not.
