Michael Jackson Signing Styles in Julien's Tompkins and Bush Sale

On December 2, Julien's Auctions is selling The Collection of Tompkins and Bush. The collection contains 465 lots of Michael Jackson memorabilia, 287 of them autographed.

Michael Bush and the late Dennis Tompkins were Michael Jackson's costume designers for 25 years, during Jackson's most successful period. They were the consignors of the signed Thriller jacket that Julien's sold for $1,800,000 in June 2011.

Almost all of the autographs in the Tompkins and Bush sale are a variation I'm not familiar with. I've only been looking at Jackson's autograph for a few years, though, and we have members here who have collected him for decades, so I'd appreciate your input and exemplars.

Julien's is the world's premier auction house for Michael Jackson memorabilia, so they would know his autograph better than most of us. I'm just surprised I haven't seen this style before.

I would think so, except maybe Lisa Marie Presley fans might think it worth more ;0)

Regardless, the brooch being put on it and Bush/Julien representing it as White House and the auction catalog and corresponding photos and video of the historic event of Michael getting a Presidential award would make it worth more, plus the 1990 White House jacket was worn by Michael several times - getting the CBS ARTIST OF THE DECADE award and with Sophia Loren at the American Cinema Awards in 1990.

I think he wore that jacket more often in 1990.

You're right, Michelle. Either Julien's didn't practice Auction House-101, verifying the attribution of the jacket, or they knew about it. Either way, it's inexcusable and casts doubt on everything that Julien's has sold.

I was going to say it may have been an honest mistake because the jackets are, after all, very similar. But then I saw this picture above, which shows that the jacket is also sequinned! That's three details which are different to the MTV jacket, too much for a costume designer to miss, and too easy for Julien to check.

They really thought it all didn't matter, didn't they???

I have seen them make errors like this in the past. Like the Military Hats I mentioned before both being thrown out the window in Budapest but we know its a lie.

They show Michael wearing a Jacket with different number of cross bars on top. But I did find pics of Michael wearing the jacket sold but it was different than the one shown and said to be worn with Sinatra.

Charlotte, its a bloody FAKE!! the sig looks fake too, how long have Juliens been pulling the wool over everyone eyes!! and look when did Michael ever sign the date AFTER 1998, i know for a fact NO ONE could get near Michael 24th June, im sure Sandy can confirm for us too. so whats this all about, sold for nearly $19,000 http://twitpic.com/bngtd6/full Maybe Roger can give us an opinion??

I know I think the signature is awful. The jacket is genuine but its the wrong one. But I did find pics of Michael wearing the one that sold.

Also look at this one and the one before it that sold last June- its our Bush signatures.

But they could easily say it was a mistaken identity. Im sure Michael changed brooches around. It might not even be the same brooch. Wish I could see it closer. Still, they are either very careless or hmmm cunning? But dont people see this? This isnt the first time they have done that.
