Hi All,
Ms. Millvina Dean late 2008: The youngest and last survivor of the Titanic disaster. Signed to me personally very shortly before she died and sent with a photo to me smiling. Sepia, thin Sharpie! :) I had limited correspondence with her and she was a most charming and wise lady. This photo I chose quite specifically. Everyone got the usual postcard of her as a baby or the Titanic - this is an unpublished hand-tinted original 1924 photograph of the stern of the White Star Line Adriatic - on which she and her mother and brother returned to England after the Titanic sank and husband/father was lost. Thus, unique.
But - this Adriatic was also ship brought over on her maiden Voyage in 1907 by E.J. Smith, the man who would later Captain the Titanic.
In NYC, Captain Smith said to the press upon the arrival of the Adriatic that he could not imagine any conditions in which a modern ship would founder- that we had...gone beyond that. He also commented that he had never been wrecked and had a very uneventful career. This...did not quite pan out.
Best wishes,
Eric
