Guess I should have done this research before I bought it, but it was an impulse buy. I don't know much about Kiss, but got this as a gift for someone else. I've been looking at autograph images online for the last hour and from what I can tell these look legit to my completely untrained eye. The seller also has been around for 10+ years and has 100% positive feedback - so I think if it's a fake, there's a good chance he didn't know.
The only thing that makes me suspicious is the fact they're all in the same color, and the price I paid seems low for this.
I'm afraid to find out the answer, but hit me with it anyway. If it's fake, how can you tell? If real, I'd love to know people's opinions about when this could be from, etc. Thanks in advance!
Thanks Richard. Again, I know nothing about autographs, or Kiss - but I sat for hours pouring through images online and comparing it to these. Many of the characteristics seem to be there. If they're fakes, I'm really curious to know how you can tell?
Other than by posting on here, how does one go about authenticating something like this?
I live in the NYC area - are there any reputable stores I can take it to to have someone examine it? It's not the end of the world if fake, but I bought it as a gift for my 10 year old son who is a huge fan. I'm just curious myself to know!
Thanks!
The seller's rating means nothing unfortunately, because very few buyers check authenticity until it's too late, and some have been getting away with selling fakes for years.
I'm not anywhere near as experienced as others here on Kiss, but I'm on the line like Richard Booth is. It looks good...but then so many of the small letters are squiggles where KISS often signs small letters with more details.
You posted a great autograph to discuss.
Roger Epperson, the top music authenticator, at REAL can give you an expert's opinion. It'll cost you $15 but worth it if you're after peace of mind. roger@rogerepperson.com
Thanks Steve. Part of me wants to get it authenticated, but I'm also afraid - because if not real, then what do I do? My son could hang it on his wall for years and love it, but then I'd always feel bad knowing it was fake. I guess these are the dilemmas you face when getting into this hobby!
Hominamad,
I think that finding out is important, for a number of reasons.
1) If it's not real, you may be able to get a refund. You don't have long, but if it's a longtime seller they would be smart to give you one if it's likely fake.
2) It would be a good lesson for your son, whether it it's likely genuine or fake.
3) It could be good longterm investment if it's real.
4) If he found out as an adult that it was probably fake, he'd feel fad that YOU were burned
So find out! If it turns out not to be likely real, then we can help you get a refund.
An update to this... Roger Epperson said he thinks this is authentic - so I'm relieved about that. Now have to find a good frame for it. Thanks for everyone's help here.
Its so cool that Steve and Roger can take the time to keep a post like this alive and seen to conclusion.
To say I think its real seems moot, but that's what we're here for. Nice job to both Steve and Roger, this community consistently impresses me.
John
John,
Your opinion matters! And as I said, I'm not as good as many here on KISS. And Roger blows my knowledge of the band out of the water.
Thanks for the kid words, though.
Steve
Yes, these autos are real. Have met just about all members of the hottest band in the land and their autos do change over the years.
We as KISS fans need a KISS forum, if one has not been created yet. This way we can unite and share autos, stories, etc! If KISS fans agree let's do it!
