Dear all,
I have found this drawing which the auction house (also the issuer of the certificate of authenticity) claims was made by Michael Jackson: https://www.gottahaverockandroll.com/michael_jackson_signed_and_ins...
Although, at first sight, the signature seems alright, I find it sketchy that the description is rather sparse in information. I was expecting to see more details about the source (friend, collaborator or family member of MJ's), the year in which it was made, etc.
From what I've read on other threads, GHRR is a mixed bag and I'm afraid my initial instinct may be right. So, what do you think? Is it genuine, too difficult to tell or is it the work of a known forger?
The reason why I'm curious is because I would like to have a drawing of MJ's tattooed and I feel that this one in particular brings together his personality and artistic interests best.
Thank you in advance and I really appreciate the work you're all doing in keeping the fanbase aware of people who are only trying to profit off of MJ's legacy.
Hmm, I clicked on the link and received the message 'a potentially dangerous link'.
I haven't seen any MJ drawings offered by GHRR currently? There are none in the current auction. Is it possible to post an image?
Hello there, Lizzie,
Apparently, I pasted the link in a wrong format. Here are the pictures. It's an older auction item, from 2018. On closer inspection, the signature has the missing "i" that has been promoted as a possible clue to likely cases of forgery. What do you think? I checked your thread about Disney drawings and I couldn't find this specific one.
Thanks a lot and I really, really appreciate your work!
No, I definitely would not recommend tattoing this! I'm fairly sure it's included somewhere in the 'MJ Historic images and Disney' thread, but it would take me a while to find it. Wascher did all the original work on drawings like these, and investigated the signatures in depth. I think the biggest collection of genuine MJ doodles was sold by MJ's former doctor, and those were auctioned by Juliens. Even MJ's doodles are generally well-drawn, and wouldn't leave an arm oddly 'hanging' like this one. I hope you can find a genuine image in the book that will be much more satisfying to 'wear'.
Thank you for your input, Lizzie! You’re right, even his doodles look better than the drawing auctioned by GHRR. I’ll probably go for the self-portrait with the glove and fedora. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with me and for the work you and Wascher do for the fanbase. It really means a lot!
If you want to be certain that a drawing is by MJ, have a look at the book 'Kunstwerke von Michael Jackson', available from Amazon.de (Germany) or ebay. This book includes around 100 MJ drawings, including abstracts, portraits, designs and cartoons. (It is not available in English, for licensing reasons.)
Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I've found a preview of the book online. Is this it? https://www.yumpu.com/de/document/view/56516998/kunstwerke-von-mich...
Hi, yes, that looks like the book. You can see more of it on YT here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4LYmmGw7-Q The language isn't really a problem if you are mainly interested in the illustrations. The pictures are mostly full-page and are very well reproduced.
Thank you so much for the YouTube link! Apparently, the drawing I am referring to is not included in the book (at least not in the e-book preview and the video)…
Dear heavens, the lengths they go to forge his artwork! They probably took the message from a note he wrote and went with it. It’s such a pity that people buy these drawings in good faith and pay their hard-earned money to own some of MJ’s art only for some crooks to profit off it.
Very likely. Here is the original drawing that was probably copied. If you compare the drawing quality with the quality of the 'cartoon' drawings in 'Kunstwerke von MJ', you can see that the quality is massively different. As is the signature. Many/ most of MJ's doodles are unsigned, (or signed 'MJ' at most) because they were just doodles. For me, a fully-signed doodle is always a red flag, especially if it has an inscription as well.
That’s a very good explanation, Lizzie! You and some other members of the website were having a discussion some time ago on your thread about the likelihood of MJ having trace drawn characters in some of his sketches. While it is rather safe to say that some photos or movie stills may have served as inspiration for Michael, I believe it is highly unlikely that he resorted to trace drawing. And the GHRR drawing seems to have been trace drawn and made to look as if it was made freehand, if that makes sense.
