I was wondering if there was anyone here with a bit of knowledge on Winston Churchill signatures. My dad was showing me a WW1 map earlier today that he bought a couple of years ago from a boot sale (about £1). It has the word Churchill signed at the top of the cover. I've compared it with other examples. Elements of it appear to resemble his signature but also, during my research, it became apparent that his signature is rather erratic (largely due to the booze). So if anyone could shed some light on it, that would be much appreciated.

this doesnt look quite right to me imo.  There also should be his initials in front and possibly the date as well

Yeah, I admit that only having his last name is rather odd. If it was his personal map, would he necessarily put his full name and the date on it? Or would he just write Churchill on it so it was obvious to others that it was his. I guess I would need to research what he wrote on personal items rather than correspondence. Most autographs I can find are on letters or photographs.

Also his real sig is small and very neat and the cs dont look right imo on example you posted.  His early sig was also much fuller than the sig we associate with him  in his prime.

It doesnt look like any of the examples I have seen or own but love to see a photo of the map if you want to share.  £1 is a good buy anyway for a map at a boot sale .  I never find anything like that.  A signed map with Montgomery, churchill and a third sig sold a  while back for over £2,000 without commission

Thanks for the info. I assumed it wasn't a genuine signature but it was worth a check. He told me it came from a house clearance seller who had basically cleaned out a wealthy estate - so someone probably sold it to them under the pretence of it being genuine. But yeah, £1 for the map is decent regardless. Here's a photo of it unfolded, as well as the signature spot.
