Recommended changes to the "Musicians Who Sell Their Signatures In Shop" Thread

As noted in the original forum, this thread is for people who subscribe to the thread on artists who offer opportunities to purchase autographs directly through them.

I've heard recommendations on separating the feedback threads from the sale notifications among some other things to "clean" up the forum. Post your thoughts here.

For me the main thread has lost its usefulness. I can’t check every email that comes in at all hours of the day. By and large I don’t check them anymore and just visit the site occasionally. But then you still have to sort through all the comments anyway to find info about new items. I want to know when when I click on one, that it will have news about a new item available. Nothing more, nothing less, like it used to be not very long ago.

For me I don’t understand why having a discussion thread and a notification thread would make it harder for people to follow.

+1

There are undoubtedly lots of views on what people want to see in the discussion. I broadly divide it in to three main camps

1.      Only want to see new links for signed music memorabilia

2.      Above plus any pertinent comments regarding reliability of site to deliver merchandise and quality of signature

3.      Above plus general discussion relating to signed music memorabilia (including general thanks for a link; wish options; question/comment on some of the broader sites offering signed options.. PledgeMusic being a current example)

As other people have noted the issue of limiting it to just new links comes up regularly, however in the year I have been following this group nothing changes and if it did for many people the loss of the other communication would lower the value of the group.

My suggestion would be to ask people logging a NEW LINK to either prefix or postfix the reply with ‘zzz’. For those who only want to see new links it would be easy for them to create a mail filter rule to delete responses to this group that do not include the text ‘zzz’. An example post for a NEW LINK would look like this:

Zzz Peter Perrett (former frontman of The Only Ones) - Signed print with vinyl pre-order of new album Humanworld

Everyone wants news and discussion. Everyone agrees on that. We just want the discussion to happen in a separate thread.

Does everyone understand the problem? Many of us see an email update about this thread, and want to check it for news as soon as we see it because it might be something we need to jump on. But 19 times out of 20 it’s a discussion comment and not a news comment. So we can’t constantly check these emails for the off chance it’s a news comment.

We want discussion! We just want to have a separate discussion thread, because we don’t want notifications on the discussion, only the news. This is a good thing for everyone. This is how the original thread was designed.

This thread used to be the finest notification system on the internet for our favorite thing - musician autographs. But it’s not useful anymore because there’s too much noise for the notification system to be useful anymore.

No communication will be lost, it will just be moved to its own big thread.

It will probably take a couple weeks of work on the main thread to keep pointing discussions to the correct thread, and we might need a sticky comment or something similar, but the main thread will get back on track in no time.

I'm starting to think that maybe this might function better as a forum section, as opposed to just a thread or two. That would better facilitate "spin-off" threads. Part of the issue is certainly the structure of the AML forum and how confusing responses and to particular comments can be.

As I mentioned before, there are certain notes that certainly subnotes that absolutely should be kept with the original posts - notably problems that collectors should be warned about (legitmate authenticity issues being at the top of the list).

The problem with a general feedback thread for all other issues (poor quality, delays, late shipment, bad customer service, etc) is that a single thread for all of that feels like it would inevitably be an even bigger mess.

What I'll probably do soon is pitch the idea of a separate forum category to Steve to at least have a better opportunity to be able to organize everything. And, at the vary least, I'll probably start a "Part 2" of this thread over the upcoming weekend that at least establishes the purpose of this thread along with some basic rules and considerations.

Rich,

I don't recall reading this discussion before. I was about to ask you if you wanted musician-direct sales to be its own forum—something that just occurred to me an hour ago! (Boy am I slow or what?) I'm adding a lot of new forums to help make Autograph Live easier to use and more efficient.

I'll set one up today with you as moderator and you can move any existing discussions into it. Touch base with me at your convenience. Thanks

The new forum is set up and this and the main discussion are in it. I named for forum "Musician-Direct Autograph Sales" but that can be changed if you want:

Best of all, you can click a box at the bottom of the forum page to be notified of every new discussion if you want. Just the discussion, not replies to it.

You'll still be notified of action in any discussion you reply to, or choose to follow that discussion by clicking a box at the bottom of the discussion's page.

Please let Rich know about any other ideas you have.

Thanks,

Steve
