My interest is in vintage Hollywood autographs and I am trying to find out a bit about SCG authentication services. I checked out their web site and the names on their staff is impressive but the price seems very low. Also, I see the certification card but does it also have a tamper proof sticker on the item itself? There doesn't seem to be a picture of the item when doing a online verification, just a simple description. How would one know if it's the correct item with the card? Any thoughts on the reliability of the service would be appreciated.

Thank-you.

SGC does place a sticker matching the certification card on the item. It is placed where the collector desires it but would normally be on the back of the item.

Their two primary authenticators, Mike Root and Larry Studebaker both formerly worked for JSA and have been in the autograph hobby for many years.

They also list other consultants they use for entertainment/music/hollywood/space autographs although who knows if they actually use them.

From what I have seen, they are doing a pretty good job. Their pricing reflects the fact that they are relatively new to autograph authentication and they are obviously competing with JSA and PSA/DNA.

Lower pricing gives them a better shot of pulling business away from the two more established 3rd party companies.

They also usually run monthly specials and you can often get 3" x 5" or smaller items encapsulated at no additional cost.

The downside is they list only a small number of signers they authenticate so you have to contact them for anyone not listed for pricing.

Sorry, I thought your reference was to SGC authentication. My previous answer referred to them. I am unfamiliar with SCG authentication so disregard my previous response unless you accidentally transposed the letters and were asking about SGC.

I had to look twice too, Randy.

Sorry, it is SGC. My fingers are faster than my brain sometimes.

Yeah, SGC is good. The pricing is mainly because they don't quite offer the same marketability of PSA at this time. I would personally say SGC is better than the Florida JSA office at the moment. The main reason I don't use SGC is their shipping pricing is even worse than PSA's, which I didn't think was possible.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the information.
