When should members have to confirm their identity? And how?

When we launched Autograph Magazine Live, we decided to give members the option of posting anonymously so they could legitimately discuss autographs with less risk of being sued.

For the most part, that's worked quite well. We have protected a lot of collectors and fans, and we've contributed in a meaningful way to the fight against forgeries.

But like a gun can be used to save lives or take lives, there have been occasions where people have used their anonymity to throw out all sorts accusations, recklessly or nefariously. And worst of all, it's not just the 6,900 members of this site that see these accusations. Over 300,000 other people have read AML in the last year who were not members.

So for the sake of parties being discussed and the autograph hobby, we will no longer allow anonymous members to make accusations. And we're also going to put some rules in place, like other communites have, to make AML a little less chaotic.

When do you think member should have to use their real names and confirm their identity? And how should it be done?

This would work, if the individual gets banned, also. That said, it's a logistical nightmare. It's simpler to verify the info up front.

As for the multitude of posters concerned about their posts coming up on search engines for employers, they really don't care unless you post things that are inflammatory. If you post an opinion and provide reasoning, I think you're protecting yourself while providing a service to others.

Personally, I always view internet anonymity like this: If you're posting real comments about real people or companies, there are real consequences. If you're going to post something you'd be afraid will be read by friends/family/employers, you should rethink hitting that "Add Reply" or "Add Post" key. At the very least, maybe having a hair less anonymity will get everyone to think with somewhat cooler heads, which will lead to more posts containing facts and supported opinion, as opposed to inflammatory remarks and personal attacks.

Seriously if it comes to confirming every member you will most likely have 1/4 of the members you have now since it is seems like a place people come to rip/bash/harm others in this hobby. It really seems that you allow folks to come on here and say what they want about people/companies that your site dislikes and then have a different set of rules for advertisers or people you are close with.

Under those circumstances the only people that win are the "chosen few" that are allowed to post as much nonsense as they wish about those they have a personal vendetta with. Anyone that chooses to take the other side to those arguments is flushed. I have no beef with anyone on here but it seems like the bully mentality is something that cannot be ignored on here.

I think that if you were to confirm the identity of everyone on the site your membership will be 1/4 of what it is after you go through all the fake accounts that have come on here to make hate filled posts then never return. Those that are against your enemies are left up and those that are against your friends are edited or removed.

Just my opinion, sorry if I pissed you off but that is how I have watched it go down for the past 2 years of watching this site.
