Reta Shaw (1912-1982) was perfect as the tough as nails matron in both movies and television. She played the escaped convict "Big Maude Tyler" on an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. She also played Barney's voice coach on another episode of TAGS. She also appeared in the Don Knott's movie The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

The above is an album page signed while she was doing the Broadway Play "Picnic" in 1953 she later was int he movie version. On the reverse is Eileen Heckert also from the play.
