Thank Roger, for my collection it doesn't get much better than that Upton ALS. I've been collecting for about 2 years, I was interested before but, I was put off by the costs. Now I have a little more money from time to time so I get what I can, when I can. I also collect WWII autographs and I have several hundred I obtained, either personally or sometimes second-hand. Lastly I collect Japanese Flags that were brought home from the Pacific in WWII.

Here is a great 4 Page ALS signed by Emory Upton circa 1871 that is being sent to his friend and another Union General Thomas Ruger. Ruger is going to be taking the upcoming position of Superintendent of Cadets at West Point, where they will serve overlapping careers for a period of 4 years. Upton critiques the current Superintendent Pitcher "he's too kind hearted" as well as outdated policies at the Academy. He also mentions General Thayer, who is known as "The Father of West Point". He goes on to portray his confidence in Ruger's ability and outlines his ambitions about how they should reform the school during Ruger's tenure.

While Upton may have been the most one of the most brilliant young Tacticians to emerge from the war, sadly his writing is just appalling to read. I have most of it transcribed, if anyone is interested.

Happy Collecting!

Here is my very latest signature, a MG George H. Thomas signature with Rank. The paper is in rough shape, but the price was way too good.

Cheers Matthew - If there are any you are looking for, don't hesitate to ask - I have a few McClellan examples myself too, and some items connected to Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed. I find the era very interesting.

Thanks Irishjohan, This weekend I will post large pictures of the front and back of the Francis C. Barlow letter. It is a letter to his friend Edwin Abbott, another Harvard Graduate.

Excellent stuff! I'd be interested in seeing the Barlow signature. I have some of Franklin B. Gowan - an influential figure of the same era. Nice work!
