Preparing glossy items for signing

This column will focus on just that! My personal experience has proven that using a white eraser to rub down sportscards and glossy magazines will help to remove some of the gloss allowing the ink or paint from whatever writing medium you are using to 'catch' the surface better and prevent the bubbling effect you get on un-prepped items. Here I'm looking to find other techniques some of you have used with success in the past.

I use baby powder and spread it over the item then wipe it off good and it take the gloss down so that your magazine or photo does not bubble.

Thanks for your post, Tim. I have seen other collectors do this as well. I personally stick to the white eraser since I always thought the baby powder thing might be too messy. But, I guess it can't any messier than having to wipe off eraser particles! I'll test out this method and see which one I prefer afterward.

I just learned about these tricks not too long ago. I wish I would have known them sooner. I have a few magazines and cards where the sharpie didnt catch the surface.

I have used a gum eraser for the last 10 years or so. The signatures seem to hold up pretty good but as you have said the "eraser crumbs" get everywhere.
