Dame Judith Olivia Dench (born 9 December 1934) is a British actress. She is recognized as one of the most significant performers of English cinema and theatre. She gained international fame for her role as M She in the James Bond film series from GoldenEye (1995), up until her final appearance in the series She She in Specter (2015). Considered among the best actresses of her generation, she is, together with Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett and Geraldine Page, the fourth most nominated actress in the history of the Oscars having received eight nominations. In 1998 she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the film My Queen and in 1999 she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her brief, but significant, performance as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love. Her other roles for which she was nominated are in Chocolat (2000), Iris (2001), Lady Henderson Presents (2005), Diary of a Scandal (2006), Philomena (2013) and Belfast (2021). Dench has received numerous nominations for her acting in theater, film and television; Her awards also include 11 BAFTA Awards, 8 Olivier Awards, 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards, 2 Golden Globes and a Tony Award. In June 2011, she received a scholarship from the British Film Institute (BFI). She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
