Luigi Numa Lorenzo Einaudi (Carrù, 24 March 1874 – Rome, 30 October 1961) was an Italian politician, economist, academic and journalist, second president of the Italian Republic (the first to be elected by the Italian Parliament). He was a member of the Constituent Assembly. World-renowned intellectual and economist, Luigi Einaudi is considered one of the fathers of the Italian Republic. He had three sons, Giulio (who founded the famous publishing house that bears his name, Giulio Einaudi Editore), Roberto and Mario, politician and university professor.

Vice President of the Council of Ministers, Minister of Finance, Treasury and Budget in the IV De Gasperi Government, between 1945 and 1948 he was Governor of the Bank of Italy. From 1948 to 1955 he was president of the Italian Republic. As head of state he conferred the role on four prime ministers: Alcide De Gasperi (1948-1953), Giuseppe Pella (1953-1954), Amintore Fanfani (1954) and Mario Scelba (1954-1955); he appointed eight senators for life: in 1949 Guido Castelnuovo and Arturo Toscanini (who renounced the nomination), in 1950 Pietro Canonica, Trilussa, Gaetano De Sanctis and Pasquale Jannaccone, finally in 1952 Luigi Sturzo and Umberto Zanotti Bianco.

He could not appoint any judge of the Constitutional Court because the Court, although foreseen by the Constitution since 1948, was established only in 1956, a year after the end of his mandate.
