Tina Turner, pseudonym of Anna Mae Bullock (Brownsville, November 26, 1939 – Küsnacht, May 24, 2023), was an American naturalized Swiss singer, among the most famous and acclaimed female performers of rock music. With a career spanning more than half a century, spanning from the 1960s to the 2000s, she has been called "the queen of rock 'n roll". In 1991 she was inducted along with ex-husband Ike Turner into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 1967 she was the first American artist and the first woman to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. In 1986 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She achieved her first commercial success between the sixties and seventies together with her husband Ike Turner, forming the duo Ike & Tina Turner, with whom she recorded internationally renowned singles such as It's Gonna Work Out Fine, River Deep - Mountain High, Nutbush City Limits and, in particular, the famous cover of Proud Mary by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The two divorced professionally in 1976, at the end of a troubled romantic relationship, which was followed by a period of commercial oblivion for Turner. During the 1980s he returned to great international success with the 1984 album Private Dancer, certified platinum in various countries with over twelve million copies sold and the hit What's Love Got to Do with It which became his only number one hit in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. This regained popularity continued with Top 10 singles such as Better Be Good to Me, Private Dancer, We Don't Need Another Hero, Typical Male, Bonnie Tyler's cover of The Best and I Don't Wanna Fight. In 1999 she released her last album Twenty Four Seven while at the end of the Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour in 2009 she retired from the public scene. Turner has received twelve Grammy Awards over the course of her career, including eight competitive and four honorary, as well as three Grammy Hall of Fame Awards and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In December 2005 she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors for her performance art, joining a small circle of artists that also includes Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed her in 17th place in the ranking of the best singers of all time and in 63rd place in the ranking of the best artists. With over 100 million copies sold worldwide, Turner was one of the most successful artists in the history of rock music. In 1993, Tina-What's Love Got to Do with It, a biopic of her life, adapted from her autobiography of the same name, was made. Turner also garnered acclaim as an actress, starring in the films Tommy (1975), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Last Action Hero (1993).
