Bill Cosby, born William Henry Cosby, Jr. (Philadelphia, July 12, 1937), is an American actor, comedian, stand-up comedian, screenwriter, television host, television producer, musician, composer and former singer. He is also a writer and television director. He is best known for the TV series The Robinsons, which he produced and created. In it Cosby plays the role of Dr. Cliff Robinson for eight seasons, from 1984 to 1992. The series was the most followed in America for five consecutive seasons in the period 1985-89. Between the eighties and nineties he was the highest paid small screen personality in the United States. In 1976 he obtained a doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts, while in 2002, the writer Molefi Kete Asante included him in his book The 100 Greatest African Americans. In 1966 he became the first African-American actor to win the Emmy Award in an acting category, obtaining it as best leading actor in a drama series for Spies, thanks to which he won a total of three. Since the 2000s, Cosby has been accused by more than 70 women of rape and sexual abuse, crimes that allegedly took place starting in the mid-1960s. Many of the self-declared victims claimed to have been raped by the actor after having been drugged by him. Acquitted of all other charges, in 2018 he was convicted of a single rape, with a sentence ranging from 3 to 10 years in prison, but in 2021 the conviction was annulled due to judicial defects and he was released .
