Dame Julie Andrews, born Julia Elizabeth Wells (Walton-on-Thames, 1 October 1935), is a British actress, singer and writer. Julie Andrews is considered a living legend, winner of numerous awards, including an Oscar, five Golden Globes, two Emmys, three Grammys, two BAFTAs, a People's Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild, an AFI Award, a David di Donatello, a Golden Lion, three Tony Award nominations (one rejected) and awarded the honor of Dame of Commendation of the Order of the British Empire, the Kennedy Prize and the Lincoln Medal. Andrews is a Disney Legend and has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6901 Hollywood Boulevard. Gifted with a prodigious four-octave voice, she is a successful child prodigy on the English music hall circuit of the 1940s. As a teenager she made her Broadway debut, quickly becoming a musical theater superstar, thanks to classics such as My Fair Lady and Camelot, and the star of pioneering programs on American television. At twenty-seven she made her first film, Mary Poppins, which was followed by other highly successful films, such as The Sound of Music, Hawaii, Torn Curtain and Millie, which established her as the highest paid and most sought-after actress in Hollywood in the sixties. In 1969 she married the director Blake Edwards and began an artistic partnership with him which, over the following twenty years, saw her as the protagonist of many of his films, including: 10, S.O.B., Victor Victoria and That's Life. In the nineties she returned to triumph in the musical theater of Broadway but, in 1997, an unsuccessful operation on her vocal cords deprived her of her glorious singing voice. In the new millennium she is experiencing a cinematic revival, thanks to successful comedies such as Pretty Princess and Prince Charming, and animated blockbusters to which she lends her voice, including the sequels to Shrek and Despicable Me. At the beginning of the pandemic, from home, she launched various entertainment activities during the lockdowns and increased her work as a voice actress (she is the narrator of Bridgerton, the most watched program in the history of Netflix until 2021). Her discography includes four platinum albums and the Sound of Music soundtrack is the most successful album of the twentieth century (109 weeks in the Billboard top ten). In addition to her career as an actress and singer, Andrews has been, for more than 50 years, an author of children's books (with numerous best sellers to her credit), a theater director (her direction of the sixtieth anniversary of My Fair Lady breaks the record box office at the Sydney Opera House) and as a television writer and producer (the Netflix series Julie's Greenroom). In her imminent future there is also her debut as a film producer.
