Ballroom,

That's a great question you have there. If it's based solely on member ratings I think they're protected, but someone should get the opinion of an attorney.

I think eBay's real risk is their approved authenticators. A lot of people are relying on Global Authentication because eBay has them on their approved authenticator list.

Steve,

Nice comment, how about the other companies that are on Ebays authentication list that are being questioned by the Feds? Yeah you know their name. Btw, Global Authentication Inc went out of business in 2009 and is not listed as an approved authenticator on EBay.

You might want to fill everyone in on how things are going with regard to the Mastro situation since you were an original investor in Collectors Universe and you are a promotor of their services. That is much more important to the hobby than your constant bashing of others when you are supposed to actually be a "moderator" of your own site.

I REALLY THINK EBAY SHOULD REQUIRE EVERY AUTOGRAPH POSTED ON THE SITE TO PASS A PSA, GAI, OR JSA 3RD-PARTY AUTHENTICATION TEST BEFORE BEING LISTED, REGARDLESS OF THE BASHING, THOSE THREE ARE THE ONLY LEGIT COMPANIES IN BUSINESS. I'VE PUT SOME LONG HOURS IN SEARCHING THRU 1,000's OF AUCTIONS TRACKING A GROUP THAT IS COUNTERFITING PSA, GAI, AND JSA COA'S AND HOLOGRAMS ON EBAY (CLICK HERE:LINK 1, LINK 2). I ONLY SAY THAT TO SAY THIS, I SEE NO DIFFERENCE IN PSA, GAI, OR JSA AFTER MY RESEARCH. THAT'S MY PERSONAL OPINION AND I DON'T EXPECT EVERYONE TO AGREE - WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A OPINIONATED BUSINESS AFTERALL. I REALLY DO HOPE EBAY DOES AWAY WITH EVERY SELLER LIKE steelerfan78610...

I CAME ACROSS THIS SITE TONIGHT, ALMOST MAKES steelerfan78610 LOOK BETTER, LOL!

THE SELLER'S NAME IS pridefight2003 (CLICK THE NAME TO SEE HOW MANY TIMES HE SOLD THIS BALL) HE HAS A CURRENT AUCTION UP, EBAY#280971770108, LINK. IT'S SAFE TO SAY steelerfan AND pridefight SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED AROUND PAINT-PENS.

I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF, I HAD TO POST THIS! I GUESS steelerfan HAS SOME COMPETITION LOL!

JamesMcK - this keeps up and we are going to need to issue numbers to keep track of which James...

your post on pridefight2003  could be right on target -or- it could be that this seller is using the same picture for each sale.  This is ok to do in listings, but it needs to be clarified in the description.  The seller however is in violation of ebay policy by NOT posting clearly and describing the COA.

As I've told you many times before, Steve, I have not had a financial interest in Collectors Universe (and therefore PSA or PSA/DNA) in years. They haven't even advertised with us since we last published a print magazine in 2010. I don't know any more about the Mastro situation or the Feds than I've reported on this site. If I learn more, I'll report it.

The reason I warn people about autographs certified by Global Authentics is this:

  • If you buy an autograph certified by JSA or PSA/DNA, it's likely genuine.
  • But based on what we've seen on the market, if you buy an autograph certified by Global Authentics, it's likely not.

I find this very interesting:

A quote from James McNight's post:

"I ONLY SAY THAT TO SAY THIS, I SEE NO DIFFERENCE IN PSA, GAI, OR JSA AFTER MY RESEARCH. THAT'S MY PERSONAL OPINION AND I DON'T EXPECT EVERYONE TO AGREE - WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A OPINIONATED BUSINESS AFTERALL. I REALLY DO HOPE EBAY DOES AWAY WITH EVERY SELLER LIKE steelerfan78610..."

James can you elaborate further?

@ Steve Cyrkin,

You should really change your title from 'Moderator' to 'Administrator' and assign some trusted users of this site the responsibility to moderate. That way you can push any agenda you like and as 'Administrator' (which you are anyway) users will know to take it 'with a grain of salt' and those that have no idea this is your site will then fully understand that it is.

That is how a blog is normally handled in the IT world.

I dont think giving certain members powers will do any good really. Steve seems to do a very good job at moderating and steve is pretty well known as the owner. One good thing about this site is that i dont see any agendas being pushed which i think is how it should be. Certain companies are favored and others not, but that seems to be based on the quality of the items in most cases. I kind of tend to go towards the opposite opinion that this site has succeeded very well b/c their arent multiple members who have control, where as other sites have. And then their would always be those wondering why certain members got certain privilages, etc, which adds fuel to the fire. Most sites do follow a different formula, but i think thats what makes this site stand out.

not to steer this into a different direction but these paintings with broad brushes really does need to be qualified.

e.g. Cyrkin said;

  • But based on what we've seen on the market, if you buy an autograph certified by Global Authentics, it's likely not.

but I have not seen any compelling evidence or substance at all that GA certed NASCAR items by Brandon have had "any" problems whatsoever.   Based on some specific threads the has been focused dicussion on Jeter and a few others that signals some exemplars or interpretations made by GA are indeed faulty if you agree with the posters.

Sometimes these broad sweeping statements and use of "we've" seem heavy handed just like saying everything from the former GAI is not-authentic.  Except fot the thousand hand'em certs on the FL. Warehouse we also know that statement is not completely accurate either.
