Now, a much more interesting auction is the one in Rome. Two fingers and a tooth removed from Galileo Galilei's corpse were thought to have been lost. Well, they were found.
The astronomer's body had these items removed by admirers, 95 years after his death, when his body was being moved from storage.
By 1905, these items and the traces of them, had disappeared.
But the container with the thumb and finger were recently found, and a private collector bought them at auction.
They have documentation from the family that passed them down from generation to generation.
Now a museum has them, and will put them on display (not sure the appear of seeing a finger; maybe some drawings of the planets that he did or something...)
I've never seen a signature of Galileo on the market. But hey...the thumb and finger. Those are things he would've used to sign his name. That may be as close as autograph collectors are ever going to get.
