I have a large collection of autographs from The Kids in the Hall -- my favorite comedy troupe ever. I'll never sell them.
It seems every five years the guys tour -- and they're good about signing before and after shows (at one show, they came into the merch booth 40 minutes after the show to sign items and take photos).
I've gotten all my DVDs signed, an 8 x 10 from their movie Brain Candy.
Well, the other day I drove up to the Irvine Improv to see two of the 5 members do stand-up (Kevin McDonald and Scott Thompson). I didn't have anything to get signed, but they were hanging around after the show and it was fun to talk with them.
I had asked Thompson at Comic Con a few years ago, what the weirdest thing was he ever signed. He told me a male body part.
Maybe being asked that question inspired him to add this story to his routine. He talked about the time he signed another mans junk -- and, he said the weirdest autograph he ever signed was at a comedy club in Canada (where the troupe is from).
The guy working the club said he was a big fan, but that they had a rule at the club. You weren't allowed to ask for autographs (lots of work places have rules like that if entertainers are in and out). A friend I have that works for a record label had a similar rule he had to follow -- and he once had Bruce Springsteen in his office for an hour, and McCartney another time. Both great signers that would've easily signed for him.
But I digress.
Thompson's story continues.
The guy asked him to sign his computer, and he asked that Scott not mention that, because he didn't want his boss to find out he asked for an autograph from one of the performers.
Scott signed the guys computer, writing "Your secret's safe with me!"
Well, Scott found out a few years later, the guy got busted for having child pornography on his computer. And all he kept thinking was that -- the authorities are going to see this signature on the side of his computer that says "Your secret's safe with me, Scott Thompson."
Great autograph story from one of the Kids.
Go see them if you get the chance.
