Hey guys, I had a question. If I want to learn someone's autograph by studying their signature but I have no access to getting an autograph myself in person. How am I to tell what's real and what's not? I understand that celebs autographs change out of the blue from time to time also there are many factors that can come into play when the certain celeb signed that item that can make the signature look odd but still authentic. As far as "older signatures" I know that the celeb isn't signing like that or it's rare for them to sign you study the samples that are out there etc. Of course I've gotten better with the samples I have on the people I study but of course there will always be from time to time some that will always throw me for a loop.
My situation is that I don't have access to celebs in my area and getting stuff in person isn't going to happen "for now" The only thing I can think of is to technically make friends with people are the RACC and to just buy autographs from them etc. I would like to be able to tell what's real and what's not by looking at it.
Does anyone have any advice for me? Should I keep building up my exemplars of what I already have? I know it helps somewhat and you start to see the signing habits but to be honest I just don't know anymore.

You should perhaps request from anyone that owns any authentic examples that they could be kind enough to help you with your file.
I do that from time to time, depending on the celebrity.
Maybe just avoid the signature unless you can get premium examples from a source you feel 100 confident in, or direct from the source (i.e. celeb/artist's website). That might be a very short list, but it could be worth it. Your options will be limited, but peace of mind will be a lot better.
I'll tell you one thing about learning a particular autograph that might be helpful - look to fans, not sellers. If I'd relied on sellers for help on Florence Welch's autograph, I'd be completely lost. When people want help on U2, I direct them to the U2 Eastlink community, where knowledgable fans discuss genuine items (and share their own examples). Such a community is less polluted with people who might have other motives or lesser (and less helpful) examples.
I mainly study The Runaways, but nowadays since I know their autographs so well I never question my ability to tell what's real or what not but then again who would really forge them? Others I study I've gotten good at but some I question and just stay away from. etc. Thanks for the advice Rich.
