Hello everyone,

I am a huge fan of the guitar player Doc Watson. He is such a remarkable individual, and to be blind and such a talented player is really amazing. I have searched for his autograph for a while and have found some interesting things. Because he is blind, i really dont think he "signs" items so much. From the examples that i have seen, his helper, often his daughter, holds the pen and guides the pen along while Doc places his hand on top of it. I wrote to him a while back and was informed that this is how he signs. I can understand this completely and it doesnt bother me at all, but in my searching, i have found 2 distinct styles of signatures. Their could be more that i just am not familiar with though. One is definetly his daughter, and the other i believe to be his assistant. This signature can be seen in the example below where Doc is signing the mural as his assistant guides the pen. So these are the signatures people get.

My question is, has anyone actually seen or gotten a Doc Watson autograph where they saw him sign his full name without the help of an assistant. This may not be within reason and i understand that due to him being blind. I know that i can write my name with my eyes closed, although it may be sloppy, but since he went blind so young, it probably is a different ball game. But if anyone out their has such an example of his signature i would love to see it. Either way he is a truly remarkable individual.

And just as an aside, do you consider an autograph genuine in this case, when a blind, or otherwise debilitated celebrity uses an aid to sign. I have a similar "autograph" from Jason Becker. I wrote to him and his aid was very kind and wrote a note back to me and Jason signed the item by putting his finger tip in ink and stamping it on the paper. I personally do consider these legit autographs as the celebrity really did take the time to sign in the best way that they could.

Thanks for reading. Here are the 2 distinct signature styles i have seen.

This example is very similar to the fan below. I believe this to be helped/signed by Doc's daughter

The signature  below is of Doc and his assistant signing a mural. The assistant guiding docs hand. This is the 2nd variation i have seen.

The signature below seems to be in the same hand as the mural signing above. I believe this to be the 2nd variation once again, and signed/helped by Docs male aid.

The signature below is an example i just acquired. It was signed by  Doc along with Jack Lawrence. This signature looks extremely similar to the 1st example posted, and i believe this to be the version that is helped by his daughter. The biggest clues bein the D in doc, and the last name Watson.

Sorry to hear that he just passed away.

I know this is several years down the road, but maybe you’re still here.  (This is my first post) — so I guess I’ll see how successful I am in uploading a pic ... of this poster I just acquired a few days ago at my local Goodwill — for 3 DOLLARS!!
