Hi members, being new to collecting autographs, I'm wondering how one goes about getting good examples of real signatures to compare. I'm thinking by best bet is to search the web for originally signed pictures that are being sold as reproductions. There are so many fakes out there that to a newbie it's hard to tell what's what for comparison purposes. How do other members approach this? Is there a database to look at somewhere that I'm not aware of? It just occurred to me that it would be great if this forum contained such a database.

Hi Mercedes. Its a good question and there's no hard and fast rule. Try searching these forums- members often post examples in discussions and theyre a great learning opportunity. I would also suggest if youre new to the hobby you could create a post here requesting members share their exemplars of whoever you're looking for. Members are usually very happy to share and help!

Thank you! Requesting exemplars on this forum is a great idea!

I would not recommend searching the internet for repros.  These scumbag sellers actually sell reprints of FORGERIES in many cases.  it's laughable.  Unfortunately there is no magic formula.  Every autograph has a different path to learning authenticity.  PSA has a database that has a pretty substantial and comprehensive database covering sports, presidents, entertainment etc.  That might be a good start.

Thank you! I didn't realize the repros were of forgeries as well. Is the comprehensive PSA database accessible? I didn't think it was.

It kind of a matter of what you're looking for and how popular a collectors item it is. There are an insane amount of celebrity signatures past and present, so creating something even marginally comprehensive is impossible.

That being said, there are many forums, facebook pages, fan pages etc. out there about the topic by dedicated fans.

As terrier said, the repros are often of bad forgeries, as those sellers generally have no clue what's real or not (and don't care).

Thank you! I see it takes some effort to get exemplars!
