Hey everyone. So I accidentally originally posted this in the blog section which was my fault. I’m new and learning.
I purchased a set of John Wayne documents (posted above) that belonged to Senator George Murphy from California. The letters are very interesting in my opinion as it puts John Wayne smack dab into the middle of American politics. Long story short the collection is only 8 documents. One is his full signature, three of them are just signed Duke, one of them is signed Duke with a hand written note attached and finally a Telegram from John Wayne to a US Senator. I’m having a hard time valuing these items due to their political nature. All of the letters I’m finding online are “fluff,” pieces per say. I’m wondering 1) How you go about valuing an item with historic context and 2) What service would you recommend for the authentication. I’m only keeping three of the documents and although everything is on the up and up, most people won’t purchase items uncertified. Any help would be wonderful. Thanks!

Some would say that if the letters were related to his film career they would be more valuable, but others interested in politics might place a premium on these.
It will be tough to find exact comparables. These are prime auction candidates.
As for authentication, my strong personal preference is for a letter not a sticker.
Thank you very much for your honest opinion. I agree with the stickers. I’ve seen so many good autographs ruined with certification stickers. I wouldn’t know where to begin to auction them or really even how to sell them. I appreciate your views on some people liking them for his film career and others liking the history. Probably two completely different mind sets in collectors when purchasing I would assume. I’ve only ever collected historical items so that’s how I see things during purchases.
Others will know better than me, but you probably need an auction house and not Ebay, for example.
Thank you again for the advise and taking the time to speak with me. I appreciate it.
I assume the letters are the ones you'll be keeping.
The ones with the London address are intriguing. Chelsea SW3 is the part of London I lived in when I worked there for several months a couple decades ago.
That’s really amazing. Small world eh? No I’m keeping the three pages that talk about the Panama Canal and are signed on the bottom of last page. It appears to be the rough draft of a letter to the President or someone very official. Wayne had a way with words or better yet lack of tact. I’m only keeping one signature. Everything else I’m selling. The letter that he wrote a note on intrigues me but I don’t need it.
