Hi all!

My Grandad gave me his copy of 'Bolan Boogie' vinyl the other day, and when I got the vinyl out I noticed this on the sleeve. My grandad can't remember where he bought the vinyl from as it was so long ago. It's an original copy. I'm 90% sure it's not an authentic signature, but it's just so random. A girl can dream! Thanks :)

I'm 110% certain it's a fake. Not even close, sorry.

Yes that's fine, like I said I was pretty sure it was fake. It was the 'm' that was the biggest give away for me, as I've never seen him to an m with a flick/curl like that before

Well  I'm not so sure it's a fake, Daisy, all due respect to Mikex.

From my humble research, Marc's signature wasn't so rigidly consistent not to allow for a few small variations. He experimented with it, and I see nothing there to damn yours as a fake. The curvaceous M looks a bit art nouveau and sensual, which was in keeping with Marc's aesthetic.

The reason I post, though, is that I also have a Bolan signature with smiley face beneath, very similar to yours.

I find it a bit odd that a forger would add such a detail. I presume mine is a fake, but I don't know conclusively. It could be a fake fake, i.e. real, tee hee.

I can't seem to post images, someone tell me how if they want to see my Bolan signature ( also has the rest of T Rex with it, Mickey Finn, etc). Funny that back in the early 70s, stars had to sign the rather boring inner sleeve and had no marker pens to splurge their name on the cover.

Hi! Thanks for replying! Just seen your photo, and the smiley faces look identical!

Side note, I also have problems posting photos from my phone. It seems to be a chrome problem. It works at random times but mostly not.. I switch over to Firefox whenever I need to post a photo on here now and it works on there 100% of the time

Thanks Jason, I'll bear that Firefox trick in mind for future reference.

It's 100% fake. I consider myself an expert on Marc Bolan autographs, so I know what I'm talking about.  Just because the smiley face looks similar doesn't make it authentic. This example is nothing like a Marc Bolan autograph. I would bet my house on it. also your t.rex autographs are fake. They look nothing like authentic t.rex autographs. You need to do some research, as you are passing judgement on something know little about.

Hi Mike-I bet you get invited to a lot of parties.

'I consider myself an expert on Marc Bolan autographs, so I know what I'm talking about...' is circular reasoning. I consider myself an expert at lovemaking, and deeply attractive to all women, there's no questioning the matter.

Also, what does being a self-proclaimed 'expert on Marc Bolan autographs' consist of? How do you start, where do you go, and who do you need to know? Have you seen 1,000 Bolan autographs? 500? 50? At which of those tremulous milestones did you become 'an expert'?

I wasn't claiming any of the autographs are real, if anything, I think the smiley faces are the trademark of the same faker. Interesting, all the same. What I say above is clearly only meant light heartedly. Perhaps that doesn't come over. [Additional comments removed. EKL]

When I say my 'Bolan signature', I meant hypothetically, not that it actually WAS. My ones are obviously fake, but I still think they're fun. The Bill Legend one isn't even spelt correctly. Also, the sleeve isn't even the inner sleeve of Electric Warrior.

I think your moral indignation would be justified if I was selling them for £1,000, but otherwise, you need to lighten up.

Bolan's signature is odd in that he tried three different versions of the B at various points, as I say, it wasn't fixed, unlike John Lennons', whose signature barely changed throughout his life.
With that in mind, it's not impossible to imagine him experimenting with the M. That is all.

I also like your term '100% fake', tee hee.

When comparing just the inscription to known examples of his handwriting, I havent seen this style of G, but oo is on point as well as the d and k..  now when searching just the signature, I cant find an example where the M, even when it has a curl, doesn't lead directly to the start of the a... the signature doesn't seem to be fluid. Im no expert on him but there are some good aspects here which tells me this needs more research. We need more known in person examples. Its an easy signature to forge and the key may be found in the "good luck" inscription

I will bet my house on it being fake. There is zero percent chance of it being authentic. It looks nothing like a Marc Bolan autograph. It's not even up to eBay standards.

Where are the good aspects?

Here are some authentic examples..

S'funny, on a character note, 'Good Luck' doesn't sound like something Marc would write, too pedestrian, almost sounds sardonic. I reckon he'd write something a bit more sparkly, or hippie-ish.
