Hello everyone,

I just recently purchased an item on a gamble and was wondering if i could get some opinions on its authenticity. I sent it in to Roger to look at via QO, but he isnt familiar with him, so im reaching out to the community.

Its a signed Impressions LP by Curtis Mayfield and one other that i cant make out on the reverse. I looked through all the examples i could find of Mayfield, and saw basically 2 signature styles. One was a more spelled out version of his signature from apparently early in his career, and the other was a quick mess similar to the item i purchased. I was able to find several examples of this style, including one posted by another AML member.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. Here is the signed LP:

Here is a signed photo another member posted that stated they acquired it through a major auction house (i believe im recalling that correctly).

Hi Carl,

Like you, I purchased a Curtis Mayfield autograph in 2006 on a gamble from a seller on eBay that was selling mostly sports stuff - this and a Stevie Wonder signed album were the only non-sports items. The price was so low that I couldn't pass it up, so who knows? Attached is another example - for better or for worse... I hope this helps.

Thanks Jamil,

Any and all info helps. Do you happen to remember the sellers name or can find it? This could add validity to both our purchases (or possibly hurt us, lol). I too bought this from a seller who had it at a very low price. Typically when i see stuff like that, i move on. But the more i looked at it, the more i could see it being real. Plus the back signature would be an odd one to forge. Not only that, but the listing didnt mention Curtis Mayfield at all. It was solely for The Impressions. So i could potentially see bidders missing it. It didnt mention Mayfield in the description at all either. I really dont think the seller knew he had potentially signed the album.

Yours looks alot like the earlier style of Mayfield that i saw. I hope its real. Unfortunately their arent alot out their to compare too. But thanks for posting. And if we bought from the same guy, maybe we can figure this out further. So if you could find their name that would be great.

Thanks so much Jamil

Carl

Hi Carl,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I checked my records and found that the autograph came from an eBay seller called cards-books-autographs, and the COA is from Hit-n-Run - Danny Cariseo. I have to find the COA - I'll have it somewhere, but they're no longer on eBay as far as I can tell. The good news is that Danny seems to be a good guy - see what Richard Simon (I like Richard a lot) has to say about him here:

He also is an anti-forgery guy - http://www.angelfire.com/biz5/puru777/howcantellforgery.htm

Like I said in the previous post, they were selling mostly sports stuff and had the Mayfield and Wonder signed albums as the only non-sports stuff, so if they're not the real deal my feeling is that it wasn't intentional. I bought the Stevie Wonder, too, on the off-chance that it might be real. It was inexpensive and if I remember right it looked like one RR Auction had sold, so I took the plunge. I hope this helps. Happy hunting!
