is this a new fad now? seems like a lot of graphers are getting baseballs signed by musicians...

I don't think it's all that new, though it isn't just musicians but a number of other non-sprt celebs. I guess there's supposed to be some novety factor to it. I don't find it all that fun, really. The signatures will likely look wrong (or just plain awful), and nothing says "I'm not really a fan" like presenting a musician with a baseball to sign.
Nice. And because Geddy is so associated with baseball himself, it's one of those situations that a musician signed ball actually makes sense. Well done getting them signed, Rush are very tricky to get signings other than on offically signed items through their website.
It has been going on for years with actors politicians and musicians. From a economic stand point for the in person dealer it makes sense. Peruse some of the completed auctions for signed celebrity baseballs and you will see what I mean. Even companies like Upper Deck authenticated have catered to this market in the past selling signed baseballs by Wayne Gretzky and Kobe Bryant of the top of my head. Some people collect the unique and believe a nice baseball provides a nice palate for a autograph regardless of the persons profession. I have seen certain celebrity signed balls that sell for hundreds when a signed run of the mill photo of which there are thousands sell for $20. Again in the autograph business its all about the money.
